Ok, went out laning tonight in the rain and my drivers side wiper has decided it no longer wants to be part of the car. The metal spindal that the wiper base clips onto has snapped at the point where the pin goes through to secure it........hope that makes sense to someone. Obviously with all this rain I need it sorted pronto. so 3 questions

1)What do I need to do to fix it
2)What parts do I need
3)Where can I get the parts from that will do next day delivery so I can get it fixed before I have to drive 50 odd miles on the motorway on Friday evening in what will probably be horrible rain!

I'll try and post a pic of the broken bits so its a bit clearer!

Cheers.

If you just need the spline there are two types - the later one has a grub screw. Parts RTC4480 or STC987.

If you're unlucky you'll need the whole wheelbox PRC8495

This exploded diagram might help

ive refitted the whole assembly with a new motor recently, youll only need part prc8495, the wheelbox. this comes with a new nut and grub screw.

it is kind of a dash out job but not necessarily as bad as it sounds.

youll need to unplug the motor and unclip it and pull it out along with the cable rope thing.

then take off the sides of the dash (theres a screw under the little land rover emblem on the passenger side dash),
then undo the very top of the dash (screw in the centre, and screws in the heater vent surrounds),
you can undo the screws in the instrument panel and pull it slightly forward, if you need more access you can unscrew the speedo cable and pull it out of the back of the speedo.
you can undo the bolt that holds the wheel box in, the passenger side one is easier to access, the driver one you have to take out the heater vent piping. but either way you have to wiggle it into a funny angle to pull it out from behind the metal dash inner. the same to put the new one back in.

when you get the new wheelbox in place, reattach the cable guide tubing, and thread the cable and motor back into place and reconnect it to test.

then put everything back together.

it took me about 45 mins to take apart the dash first time i did it.

Ok thanks for that guys. Looks like a new wheelbox is the way forward, looks like a bit of a fiddle. But on the plus side if I'm replacing the whole lot I can do a bodge job with some superglue until the parts arrive without worrying about wrecking anything else.

Hopefully it'll just stop raining!

Just a quick update on this. After 2 weeks driving around with my windscreen wiper araldited to the spindle i got around to replacing the wheelbox the other week. Took a while to get the whole dash off and a few false attempts to get it all back together right seeing as half the screws seemed to have been mixed up before and bodged back into place.

On the plus side I've found with some grunting, swearing and bloody knuckles it is possible to replace the drivers side wheelhousing without having to unplug the motor and remove the wiper cable. If you undo the bolts holding the wheel housing together and slide off the cable guide tubing followed by the old wheelhouse, then reverse the process with the new wheelhouse. The next bit is tricky cause you've got to get the spindle through the hole in the bulkhead while its attached to a fairly stiff cable guide tubing but it is possible with a bit of brute force. Then just reassemble the back of the wheelhousing and bolt back up.

Cheers for the help tho guys - now I've just got to work out why the drivers side wiper appears to want to wipe more than just the screen. It hits the windscreen wash cap at the bottom of a stroke and my snorkel at the top of a stroke. The passenger side wiper is fine tho which is what puzzles me......its using the same wiper cable so surely both wiper strokes should be the same. oh and every now and then (about 1 wipe in 20) it will wipe correctly....any ideas? By the way its always done this even before I started wrestling with wheelhousings!
