Hi All,

Ok I have had some radiator trouble with my 98 Discovery V8i Auto and whilst I have been getting a new one sorted it has been stood for about 3 weeks, now when I am driving there is a bit of vibration when Im using the brakes on the brake pedal.

I wasn't sure if it was a bit of dirt or rust that has gathered on the disc whilst she has been stood.

I have attached a picture of the brakes whilst the wheel is still on, I know this has to be a pretty daft question but do they look ok, or does anyone have any thaughts on what could be causing the vibration.

Thanks very much

John

Can't suggest what the vibration is but rust would be gone after a couple of times using the brakes.

The vibration has calmed down but still noticable, I will wip the wheels off tommorow and have a good look. Will post an update when done.

Cheers for the advise.

A bit trcky to say from a photo but it looks like the disc has a bit of a step at the top. If there is a noticeable lip around the edge of the disc there is a fair chance it needs to be replaced unless you can measure the thickness of the disc to make sure it has not become to worn. The problem you describe is typical of a warped disc.

For what it costs and the work involved change the discs on that axle and then check the others. Some things you can afford to mend and make do but brakes (and steering) it just aint worth it.

Hi All,

Final Update, it was the front brake pads, they had worn down just about to the metal, one of the pads were actually on the metal and I think that is what was causing the vibration.

I have run the car for about 30 miles now and the vibration has stopped and its amazing the braking seems to be much better lol.

The pads cost me £18.00 from my local Moto Save.

Thanks again for all the advise.

good that you got the brakes to stop vibrating but I would still check the lip.. it was the first thing I noticed and will damage your new pads pretty quickly.. it might have been a trick of the light in the pic but if you can feel a ridge when you run a finger nail out from the centre of your disc I would change them.. it's not a big job really.. although I made a meal of it when I did mine ;)

Hi,

I took a look at the lip on the discs as you suggested and it was just rust that came off with a small file, the thickness of the discs are ok, they easy meet the minimum thicknes that is in my haynes manual so im pretty happy with them now.

Thanks very much for the advise.

That's interesting, my Haynes manual doesn't quote a minimum thickness. Is yours a Disco II? What does it say the min thickness is?

Minimum thickness of the discs is not shown in my Haynes Manual either only the minimun thickness of the pads at 3.0mm.
You don't want the disc to "easy meet the minimum thickness" you want it greater than that. :)

It's usually stamped on the disc somewhere; you'll see MIN TH ....MM
which is the manufacturers recommended minimum thickness. if the discs wear too thin they can warp, crack or even shatter so you don't want skinny discs.
