Brakes

Hi all i have a 1992 disco when going at a slow speed there is a noticable squeak coming from what i believe is the brakes as when the foot brake is slightly applied the squeak goes also when pulling up to a stop just before it actually stops there is like a grumbling noise coming from the brakes can anyone tell me the cause of this please ive cleaned the brakes today with areosol brake cleaner but still no joy.

It sounds like you need to have the pads out and have a good look at them. Also check the condition and function of the caliper pistons.

While you're about it check for wear in the wheel bearings, they can get noisy.

sounds like a sticky calliper to me, calliper pistons may need a clean up and apply some copper ease to rear of the pad on reassembly.

Grumbling sounds like pads have seen better days, check condition of discs and pads and replace as needed

have a look at the backing plate, see if its rubbing against the disc mine did and I could only hear it when driving really slow

Could also be there simply isn't enough copper slip on the back of the pads.

Brother had his car in the shop 2 weeks ago for new brakes - as he drove up I was outside and was braking slightly and the squeeking was awful - no copper slip - or very little.

Land Rovers what with getting soaked and things sometimes they are perfectly good but just need stripped down, rust and crap cleaned out, push the pistons back in, clean up the pads, new copper slip reassemble and everything is as good as new - particularly the rear brakes as they don't do a hell of a lot unless you do a lot of heavy braking or towing.
