Hi All,
New to group and needing some assistance :) please.
I have been trying to search the forum and am not having any luck  and getting a tad cranky!!
I have a '98 Disco 300 Tdi. I had the brake vacuum pump replaced 18 000 kms ago and now I think it is leaking oil drammatically. Not sure if it is the BVP. If there is a serviceable gasket in the unit should I get more kms from it? In the past 12 months I have only done highway hauls. Is there a link to servicing the Brake servo vacuum pump? I read a comment from Billyloadsamud but cannot locate it.
Are there pictures? Where is the unit located on the 300 Tdi?
Any assistance :D is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
David.

Hi David, all I can do to help is to tell you where the vacuum pump is located.

Engine bay, drivers side of the engine itself, located behind the fuel lift pump.

It's black, about the size of a fist, 1 rubber pipe (3/4inch diam approx) attached and is fixed to the side of the engine block by 4 or 5 bolts.

You should most certainly get more than 18,000kms from a vacuum pump. Where is the oil coing from, are you sure it's the vp?

Mine leaks, it's on the 'to do' list and has been since I got the car! They usually leak from the outer end which is sealed and rivetted on but there is an excellent link here somewhere that shows how to drill out the rivets, reseal and bolt it back together. You need (allegedly) to set the engine at tdc before removing the pump and there is also an excellent instruction somewhere in this forum on how to do so easily and quickly. Try a search for vacuum pump maybe? Or variations of, if you've tried that.
cheers

If the brakes are working fine its likely to be just the gasket. Its a PITA to get to but can be achieved in an hour or so. The engine needs to be set to top dead centre to allow the cam inside the engine to let the pump be taken out. This is actually quite easy (easier than it sounds!) I just used my maglite and a small drillbit to locate the gap in the flywheel through the hole in the bottom of the bellhousing. once this is in the centre of the hole, dont move it and get on with the vac pump.

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies.:):). It was as anticipated, thanks Big Lad, the vacuum pump has let go. The oil is flowing from a port/hole/aperture ??? that faces the drivers side of the car.
It is now in the workshop that replaced it leaving them a puddle of a reminder. They are on a search and destroy mission regarding the source of the problem and from the supplier. I have my fingers crossed that it will be a favourable outcome.
Thanks sp33der and Griffdowg for your thoughts.
Your help was appreciated.
Enjoy your touring.
Regards,
David.:praise:
