I am seeing a few different kinds of brake pads - some with a spring on the split pin, others with the small tin bent bit of metal. Some pads have two holes for the split pins, others sit below the pins.

With my part number (RTC5756 or RTC5574, not sure what one), i seem to go on a wild goose chase online with 'replaced by XX', so i am loosing faith that i'll be buying the correct pads, pins and springs.

Whats the deal with the different pads? Are they interchangeable?

Any help to select the right ones for me is appreciated! (VIN 7FA41)

On mine the front has pins inside springs and pins through springy plates on the rear.
Year unknown and a conversion on the rear.

Thanks! Putting it all together, i think that means i need to get stc9191. Only question is, what pins!

Gmacz; i have a disco rear axle, which had pins with springs. I was advised to buy pads with the metal clips (which fit perfectly well).

Looking at a photo of STC9191, they have the holes for pins to go through, so i think i should buy the pins and springs...

Had a look again at this. I have solid brake disks with the bars (rather than split pins) going through the brake pads. There are no springs on them, though i imagine they were missed at some point.

When i look for the pins and springs (STC8575), it says its for defenders with vented discs....

Allbrit.de says i need spring part 606688....

I assume this is suggesting i don't have an original 1988 defender front axle? I know the rear one is off a disco, but i thought it was only the rear axle (to take advantage of disc brakes).

8576 are the same but non vented and they look like my front ones.
Mine is an 85 90 but with all new axles so not much help with identity.

ah ha, that looks like the ones then - states 'from 1986' for defenders which is right enough.

I am sure this should be a more simple procedure!

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

For the disco1 STC9191 are listed as a front fitment, so the front pad is retained by two solid pins with a coil spring and passed through the holes at the top of the pad, the pin is then retained by a small split pin or 'R' clip at the rear.
Rear pad STC9188 are retained by a spring plate on top of both pads, which don't have any holes, and retained by a long split pin passing across the top of the plate and secured at the rear by open the split of the pin.

That aligns with the rear axle then which is off a disco - they were pads with split pins going through, but i've just replaced them with pads retained by a spring plate and split pins.
