Brake Drum Screw

After doing my bearing, my freind had misplaced the screw for the brake drum. There was only the one, and he said that its not important, its only to stop the drum falling off when you remove the wheel, its mainly held on by the wheel itself. Is this true? You cant be too careful with brakes!

Where'd you get that idea? no dismantling allowed so how can they tell if a hidden screw is present or not?

I believe it is not a good idea to omit it, so I would replace it as soon as possible, but it wouldn't stop me driving the vehicle in the meantime

there supposed to remove plastic trim to inspect sills but when does an mot man take arf the wheel arch liners and sill trims?

well if ya get a numpty mot thats up to you.

I go to a mot inspector that does measure discs and drums on every vehicle and only uses finger pressure on body arches not a feckin hammer.

I've never known them do it in nearly 30 years of getting series motors tested

check for "contamination and security", which is done without removing the wheel.
NOT thickness.

that means is it attached to the hub therefore the wheel must be removed in the case of drum braked vehicles to obtain a physical inspection of the brake surface.

here is the table of minimum thickness trew for you to check your brake drums for excessive wear.

"Testers are not permitted to dismantle any item during an MOT Test, hence if the amount of wear on brake shoes, for example, cannot be determined by direct observation because they are enclosed by the brake drum, then provided the braking efficiency is to the required standard then they will not result in a failure."
