Afternoon gents, after a bit of technical advice.

Replacing the disks and pads on my disco 2, ran into a problem in that I can't depress the piston back into the caliper in order to allow space for the new pads to be fitted and placed back on the disk. I have the caliper off and have applied a lot of force via a G clamp but it does not seem to want to budge. Could there be a problem with the piston somewhere? There doesn't seem to be any leaking fluid or any sign that it's damaged.

Cheers

It might be rusted solid
It might have come out too far and its tilted in the bore and jammed.
All the fluid might be backed up to the resivoir cap and its got no where to go.

Oh dear not sounding good. I've got the reservoir cap off so there isnt a back up of pressure and my next option was to unscrew the bleed nipples but to be honest one of them is pretty mangled and I'm not sure how successful that would be. I've got one of them moving slightly but it seems to get jammed half way back in - sounds like it could be an issue with the pistons being damaged from what you're saying Flossie.

Is it the rears? they seem to seize very nicely.
I wouldn't waste too much time on them.
Even if you do push the piston back, it probably wont move again.
Replacement calipers are dirt cheap.

If you do fit new ones get some heat on the brake pipe union and a proper spanner to undo it. Check carefully that the pipe doesn't turn with the union and stop if it does, you don't want the pipe going all corkscrew on you!
Work it gently back and forth and you may be lucky. Prepare yourself for new brake pipes though.
The job can grow quite quickly if you twist them then find the flexies are seized to the other end then the mounting tab drops off etc etc.

Oh god. Sounds like a standard land rover job..you think it'll take a morning and ends up costing the earth and taking days!

Cheers
