Hi all I'm new to this site but on my 3rd disco lol,
Anyway my new disco has no not due to rust on the sills (both inner and outer) but I've done a lot of reading and I can't make a decision about what to go for? What's the pros and cons if I go for box section? And same for standard replacement sills? Anyone know of any good write ups for how to do it in box? Sorry for all the questions
Thanks for any advice on advance :) by the way it's 300tdi 3door

Thanks for the replys! Looking through your write up looks very interesting! And looks a great job! I'm sure I will have a lot of questions for you lol :) did you replace any body minutes that were attached to the sills?

Box section is non standard so expect risk averse people like me to say it will have to be declared on insurance, wont pass mot etc.... it may well be fine. I would do a proper job and use yrm or froggats parts though. Its a few days work (diy welder) and will require a load of mig gas so stock up.

Thanks again :) and thanks ronsealdeath I completely understand were your coming from with insurance, but just out of curiosity why or what would cause the Box sills to fail MOT? Thanks again guys :)

I can only think that some anal bugger would say they are a repair section and should be welded all round.

Although I reckon any MOT tester in the land looking at a proper bit of steel that goes "dong" when wallopped will be quite happy. They see enough discos with no metal there at all.

Ive just dun my sills with froggatts easy on panels and i must admit i wouldnt do it again. I must admit the panels are brilliant quality but then the amount i had to cut away was more than the panel needed to bite to so ended u fabbin a floor and more hassle so id go with box if i did them again

Yeah my mot man would pass them for sure but with these things it may be worth a 5 min conversation when you go past your mot man next, just in case. But I am risk averse!

er... a sill is about 0.8mm box section, spot welded together ... My box section is 3.2mm thick, fully and puddle welded. Anyone who thinks that's less safe than standard is plain wrong. It never failed MOT due to rotten sills again ...

Actually still on the Disco, though the Disco doesn't move now .. ;)
