I'd rather replace the whole wishbone. Getting it off the rear mount can be a pig but otherwise a much easier job. At least with the drills I have it is. The wishbones get very flaky after a vew years so need replacing anyway.

I just replace the whole lower arm these days. The ball joint is a pain unless you have access to a pillar drill. I do have a pillar drill but still prefer to replace the bottom arm.

too be honest I would have used an angle grinder rather than try drill them.

Best way I've found is to drill through the rivets with (I think) an 8mm drill bit, then grind off the head on one side, then punch out the remains.

Just got back from road test. Sorted.
I removed the arm, pilot drilled to 3.5mm then out to 9.5mm. I chipped the heads off with a chisel as the angle grinder had a new disc on it with a sharp edge - needs wearing in.
Anyway, all sorted now.

my son in law replace the whole wishbone on the drivers side and then started to do the near side (left) and the big back bush just would not come off, in the end I ordered a new bush and the alloy holder and we did it, that one is now it is one the bench waiting to get the alloy housing off we have never ever had this problem before I though the nearside was a bit stiff on the suspension now we know why ,

I had the same problem and soaked the metal shaft in release oil overnight, then put the alloy housing in the vice and with a mixture of twisting, hammering and swearing at it eventually it came out. It took two of us to do it though.
I probably would have done what you did only I had already bought the bushes for it without the alloy housing. It was fun getting the old bush out too.
