Hi all i have a 98 dse with 112k and FULL dealer history and is troublefree. The aircon and heating system works fine but in the last two weeks the book symbol is displayed. Should i worry ? should i ignore it ? or does it need a trip to the garage ? Any opinions would be appreciated.

It is a HEVAC fault and needs plugging into testbook or similar to read-if all features appear operational and it heats and cools both sides then as a guess it is sensor on matrix pipes-but get it plugged in to see fault

As Fanatic says the HEVAC system is faulting and needs Testbook or similar to diagnose it.If its worked well until the cold weather then its very possible that the distribution flap is sticking when the ecu moves it through its full range of movement on boot up.But to be sure you need to get the codes read.If it is the sticking blend flap have a look on www.rangerovers.net for my fix with a self tapping screw - a bodge but it works.

Sorry to hijack thread.

My book symbol always comes on when the heating is turned very high, but never appears when in lower temps.

It all works to my knowledge.

Any ideas?

I'm unable to find any info on this 'screw' fix!

Any advice or links?

Cheers Si

Just an update .The car is booked in at main dealer on friday morning.A thirty minute diagnosis is...........FREE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (CANT BELIVE IT)
Will let you know the outcome.

What dealer is this as I'm near Plymouth and a free diagnostic is always welcome my last one was £25 from and indie?

UPDATE[ just had my free diagnosic from Roger Young Saltash for my book symbol light.Bad news its the blend motors and was quoted £265 for parts and 10 hours labour. Obviosly they wont be repairing it but where can i get a decent set of blend motors for sensible money ? and how much is a fair price for labour ? thanks everyone. ps as everything seems to be working fine is it worth doing ?

They always quote those sort of hours because officially you are supposed to remove the dash, but there are short cuts to avoid this which I suspect Indy garages are using aswell now so making a tidy sum on top!! Follow the guide on Rangerovers.net. One of those jobs that 90% of it takes 10% of the time and the rest takes the other 90% Thats what I found anyway. From memory I think I paid about £220 for a full set of blend motors a few years ago. Some go second hand but I didn't want to be doing the job again very soon so went for a complete new set. Change the heater o-rings whilst its all apart to save another job later on, even if they are not leaking at the moment, they soon will be:)

Alternatively if the book symbol is on but things are heating and moving ok live with it and do it when it becomes a neccessity.

Had mine on recently, changed the heater core temp sender and have iliminated the symbol but it hasn't changed how the cabin feels one jot!!

I think the book symbol comes on at such small voltage fluctuations that on a 10 to 15 year old motor it will be one of those things you will be chasing forever and a day.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

Dont know if he can help but theres a chap in Tavistock, Mark Kelly (have a look in yellow pages). He looks after our servicing and so on and has done for several years, he is a REALLY helpful chap and I can highly recomend him.

Did they give you a print out from Testbook ? What worries me is that MD's dont do much on P38's now cos they are too old. They will just be following fault codes.
If you are lucky a set of blends would fix it,but if the distribution flap is stiff in the box it wont. What I do is just replace the ones that dont work,if it needs one I just fit one - all three are the same so I can potentially fix three cars with one pack.I think the method shown on RR.Net involves drilling holes etc,I dont do this and I've developed a few dodges to the job,not sure how other indies do it though.

Thats what worries me. To spend out a load of money and find the book symbol still on .I should try and live with the warning on but it does bug me and when i come to sell it on it could be a problem.

From my experience you need to find out what faults are causing the book symbol not just "its your blend motors". I took my P38 to Alfords motors in Saltash, top bloke and he gave it a full going over with the diagnostics, took him well over an hour and only one height sensor fault found but he also gave the once over too. Get it read properly so you have a starting point and I did walk away from 2 other P38's with the testbook symbol showing as you dont know what trouble your buying.

I spoke to a garage owner i know today and he says he has three p38 s that he looks after and all three have their book symbol permanently on.So with that in mind and this may be a silly question but is there a way of permanently putting out this warning symbol ?
