I know all Defenders creak and make annoying noises but this is a little different. For over 2 years this noise was never present, not in the slightest. Then last summer when I tarted up the interior almost immediately the noise started and for the life of me cannot work it what it is.

Some how this noise started when I fitted the rear headlining....

Sounds like a metal on metal ding, like knocking a spanner on a roll cage, followed by a loud creaking noise. The creak is more noticeable if the right side wheels hit a bump in the road. Sounds like it is coming from somewhere behind the drivers seat area, high up. It's very hard to pin down where its actually coming from.

Recently it has gotten a hell of a lot worse and can't work out why! I know this is all pretty vague just wondering if there is anything anyone could suggest apart from earplugs or turning up the radio!

Only kidding!

I had a similar problem that took me ages to find and it ended up being the jack under the seat pushing against an old pop bottle!

Was the roll cage already fitted or back on after fitting headlining? Nut, screw, bolt, rivet, washer or summat caught between them rolling back and forth and maybe creaking against a bar when under pressure on the right hand side i.e. knocked against something when you hit the RHS bump? Dunno, maybe just a new mystery noise to add to the catalogue - did you check the inner surface of the headlining to make sure nothing was caught up in it?

Cage was fitted when I bought it and hasnt been touched bar some sealing on the left side. Headlining was 100% clean.

I thought it could be a washer/bolt etc... but it is so loud! It is as if someone is sitting in the back hitting the internal cage support with a spanner!

If the noise comes from just behind the drivers right ear then it could be the bolts holding the roof have come loose, I had exactly the same noise and tightening the bolts just above the seat belt fixing got rid of it.

hahaha

Had a check round last night, one of the rollcage bolts was ever so slightly loose, not the cause, but tightened anyway. Couldn't get to most of the roof bolts but for the most part they felt tight
