Blue smoke when cold TD4

Hi, have been looking at similar threads for a while now, but was wondering if I could get a bit of further opinion,
I picked up a TD4 with 120k on the clock recently as a project. She was wrecked inside (been used as a van!) but I have managed to get most of the bits together, including some new seats, been hard work but not expensive (got the seats for a pound! ebaytastic!)
The bodywork is in sound order, and the clutch/gearbox is great (compared to my Td4 I had a few years ago it is brill, lovely and smooth)
I've got regulators on the way for the drivers window, and the rear, couldn't be fussed with the repair kits!
It needs a few odds and sods for an Mot, nothing too major,

However the one problem I have got is she is emitting blue smoke on cold, which is particularly prevalent (ie huge clouds of it!) at 2k rpm plus, once warm she is fine at all revs. The odd puff of black smoke if I floor it but no blue or white at all.

What I have done so far:

Synergy 2 fitted

Crankcase breather filter replaced, was absolutely caked - fitted toilet roll style filter (is there anything else I needed to do here, or should I have just bought a modded BMW vortex part?)

Intercooler elbow hose replaced

Millers diesel treatment added then full tank of shell (not v power) fuel.

Drove 80 miles on Mway since all that - but still seems the same.

On order - Rest of intercooler hoses, (ive found what seems to be a hole on the left hand side one?) Pierburgh MAF, EGR mod.

She is no prob to start, but I'm fearing the turbo has had it - and although I'm sure my "fixes" won't do any harm, I'll have to take the plunge and get it replaced. (Wasn't budgeting for a turbo damn!)
What are peoples thoughts on this and how much am I looking at labour wise for a turbo change? (think it may be beyond me!)

Thanks guys, my mrs thinks I'm daft but I think it's good fun trying to resurrect an almost doomed hippo!

might be worth dismantling the breather component as a whole ..
and cleaning the valve part in white-spirits ..
i.e. the filter bit ( bog roll ) might be new .. but the valve bit might be gunked up

worth getting the bmw vortex bit at somestage ..
although the valve component should still be cleaned out every few years ..
( i think bmw recommends every 3 years .. but don't quote me :)

wait 'n see what happens regarding the smoke .. after you've fitted those bits ..
that 'hole' might .. or probably would .. account for the puff of black smoke on acceleration ..
in anycase .. that 'hole' needs to be sorted ..

~~~~~~~~~~~~
the blue smoke when cold Might just be an accumulation of oily-mess inside the intake manifold .. built up over years of use with the egr valve ..
the egr valve itself might be all gunked up as well ..
i.e. there's always some tiny bit of oil in the intercooler hoses ..
plus with the egr valve .. it gets some exhaust gases as well .. result is a build up
of an oily putty like substance ..
and if the breather filter has been running clogged up .. that will have made it worse ..
i.e. the crankcase pressure builds up and the oil return from the turbo doesn't work as it should ..
~~~~~~~

might be advisable to keep the synergy power turned 'off' 'till you get it sorted with the new bits ..
i.e. new hose .. egr delete .. etc

Thanks for the detailed reply - much a appreciated.

I'll let you know how I get on once I have fitted my bits, which will be about 2 weeks as I'm away offshore just now!

I'll remove the pcv again and clean it with white spirit this time.

Cheers!

Look like a great project. Congrats. As suggested clean the intake as it might be oily. also check the connector on the Rail pressure sensor, they corrode easily and TD4 starts working like an feckd up truck and smoking white/blue
