Dumb arse question this, but anyone know the correct wattage for the dipped / sidelights on a Disco 1 (1995 300tdi) I've just changed both bulbs, and put in 12v 5w, which is wot it said in the book in halfrauds, but keep getting flashed by other motors as I must be blinding em.

It is lifted (2" on 235/85/16/ m/t) so I reckon I should probably adjust headlight beams also, but there don't seem to be much difference between dipped and main beam, so I may have other problems?

Any advice appreciated.:D

You might have put wrong bulbs in, they should be 12v 60/55w ... and you might need to re-check the level .. ;)

This might help .. from the manual ... ;)

More likely to be flashing as you are driving on parking lights, and not using headlights.

i've got 100/80w in mine it makes a big difference..drewster did the same on his 200 and they were bright !

I'd guess the same as someone else said - people who seem to think because they've got sidelights on everyone else should too - at 5pm in the summer!!? SAD *beeps*

I had someone flash me for the same reason a week or so ago, I was in a WHITE 26t TRUCK! FFS if you can't see that coming at you at 7pm this time of year maybe it's time to swap the car for a mobility scooter!

Perhaps they are flashing for another reason as the side lights wont blind anyone as they done throw enough light.

no, I'm on about driving at night, on country roads, with main headlights on but full beam off, and was being flashed by a number of motors coming other way. I figured as I had just replaced both sidelight bulbs, this could be having an effect.

And no, I aint one ov them numptys that drive about with fog lights on when it aint foggy, or headlights on if it aint dark :)

Ah, in that case I'd get the alignment checked BUT, you'll probably find the alignment's ok it's just because you're higher up than you were.
I'd maybe get a friend to park a standard disco say 30paces from a wall, find out where his headlights come on the wall say 5bricks up (just a guess) then set yours to about the same (then they'll hit the floor about the normal distance ahead of you).
Glad you brought it up though as I've just lifted mine the same.

I have seen headlamp bulbs put in the wrong way and screwed the beam pattern. sidelights are 12v 5W headlights as already mentioned 55w/60w.

Also check the headlights are fixed to the car ok, I know sounds daft but it happens, the adjuster balls/housings can wear.

Disco's tend to adopt a tail down attitude after a few miles which can lift the headlamp beams.

Check if there is a beam height adjuster in your car to lower/raise the beams electricaly? If so before adjusting set it to it's highest setting i.e. so you can lower the lamps if towing or carrying a heavy load.

At this point the car should have plenty of fuel and be carrying a passenger.

Drive on a level surface up against a wall, put a cross on the wall in line with the middle of the lamps, reverse straight back about fifteen feet and put your headlamps on full beam, now adjust the lamps so the beam 'hotspot' is slighly lower and to the left of the mark made on the wall assuming your in the UK, or lower and to the right for the rest of europe.

Now switch to dip beam and you can see they will move lower and even further to the left/right.

Do this for both lamps and you will not be far off the mark, TBH this should be done with beam testing equipment but this method is close.

regards

Dave
