Mr Garrison from southpark once said, "There' no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people"!

so here it is: is there such a thing as a 2 wheel drive defender? or is the mere though blasfhemous?

the reason i ask is that i think the defender is awsome, it looks awsome and the size is spot on for what i need (a vehicle to go camping in). but i will probable never really go off road, a grass field on a campsite or a gravel track is probable about it so a van would do the job. but i dont want a van!! i want a defender!! i just wondered if u made it 2 wheel drive would u get better mpg???

and if u did get better mpg, is there much involved in disengaging 2 of the wheels??

thanx for now folks, lookin out for eggs and bricks being thrown at me....

Dunk.

Yes and no actually

Yes you could remove one propshaft and run it with diff lock engaged thus it being 2 wheel drive. However, no, you wouldn't achieve any saving on fuel economy at all. You still have all the gears to power, and the roling resistance would be the same, the only thing that you wouldn't be driving would be a tube between the gearbox and the diff you decided not to power.

This would actually be a false economy as you would be putting a strain oin the driving wheels and the transfer gear box end which you would have driving the wheels for which it was not built, which would damage it.

You will most probably fall in love with a Defender if you get one. However, the degree to which you remain in love is directly proportional to how much cash you've got to spend.

I just use mine for camping, so it doesn't really see any off-road action(this may well change in the future though).

Just get one!! You'll love it, I promise. :D

judders urs looks nice, just the kind im after,a black csw. have u done anything to the inside of it? sink cooker bed etc?? if so, do u have and pics?

cheers, Dunk.

Try driving a 2 wheel drive van off a wet grassy campsite, you might find 4WD more use than you thought.

Agreed, I once owned a slitty with selectable 4wd:eek:, the difference on the slippy stuff (wet grass, snow, mud) is quite noticeable when you engage 4wd.
