Hi all,
when I bought my Rangie the Indy said the sat nav didnt work perhaps due to the car being jump started. Wheteher thats the reason or not, the screen is blank with not a hint of a flicker. The button to turn sat nav on illuminates green indicating power so I'm guessing its just the screen.
Is there an internal fuse that can be checked/changed? Any other things that it could be?
to remove the screen is it just a case of gently prising it out?

thanks. Itchy.

Partly right. Most likely the sat nav computer had its power disconnected before it had shut down properly. Bottom line is its fried. You need the CD drive in the rear compartment.

I'm afraid it most probably is broken :( Check the CD holder (computer) in the boot - mine just whirred to no avail when it broke..
It's one of the more stupid features of the P38's electrics. The screen should just lift out with a bit of persuasion.
I can send you my instructions as to how to install a modern sat nav in place if you like? The prices for originals are absurd, and they're over a decade out of date..

Thanks,
I will keep a lookout for a used rear computer, prices seem to be extreme though considering as has been mentioned they are a little bit dated. It's just I don't really like looking at bits in my Rangie that don't work.
TCubed, I would appreciate the instructions for a more modern install. Thanks.

You can get the broken one repaired for about £75 plus postage to Eastern Europe, have a search on eBay for "mk3 sat nav repair". I'm planning on sending mine off soon to get it sorted.

might just be that the old sat nav unit has been unplugged for another reason. Switch the ignition on and look at the unit in the boot to see if the little red light in on, if it is, then at least you know it's still plugged in, although the connector to the screen might have been unplugged.

Removing it is as easy as taking out an old car stereo, you use the 2 bend coat hanger method.Pull the unit and see what's plugged in

Must be honest, although mine works as it should it's so out of date (even with an updated map disc) I prefer to use my Garmin.

Dodgy sat nav drives are usually unplugged when not working as they can take out the sound to the speakers & steering controls.

problem they are expensive to fix. And upgrade discs are getting harder to find. I have one with a 2010 - 2011 disc which is strugglng now so have a Garmin which has post code search etc and is more up to date with more features. Sometimes I run both for the fun of it, two ladies arguing with each other!! "If possible do a U turn"!! with the other saying turn left and left and left!!
My advice is get a Garmin or Tom Tom and put a DVD player in the hole.

If you do try fixing it with a replacement disc drive in the boot make sure its replaced with a like for like model (same part number) and ignore people who say BMW ones will fit, they dont. You will more than likely have a Carrin II or III depends on the year of your car. You should be able to upgrade a carrin II to a III (I did) pm me if note sure. There are various model numbers.

This from a reply to a post I made july 12

I have mostly bought my sat nav cds from SAT NAV CD VDO Dayton 2011 2012 Great Britain England | eBay

He is in Germany but delivery was quick and he always answers questions etc.

I have a 2000 p38 and tried to go for the Mk4 version but the Audio system didn't like it ie no voice commands and the poor screen resolution couldn't cope with the DVD Graphics, everything was very dark. Originally I had the MkII Corin unit so upgraded to a genuine Mk3 which works great.

You can see what software version you have by (if I remember right) holding the menu button in for ten seconds on boot up. Takes you to another menu system so you can see what sats you have etc. The procedure is in the Carin Book that should be in with your service book. On the MKII on the opening menu screen there was a 'set' you could select this is where the firmwear version is. A word of warning never disconnect the battery while the orange lights are lit on the satnav computer.
