black smoke

I understand this is unburnt fuel as there's not enough air getting into the engine, but I've checked every pipe fip-turbo etc, replaced saggy turbo pipes with silicon jobbies, cleaned out my intercooler and about to fit an oil catch tank to stop it getting clogged, replaced exhaust system, sealed up snorkel properly and fitted a new intake gasket..fip hasn't been tweaked and I don't want to touch it either. Anything else I should check?

Maybe a previous owner tweaked the pump, easy enough to check, i would say its a rare 200 that hasnt been tweaked mildly or otherwise.

I pulled the engine from a Discovery, but it didn't smoke at all. I thought at first it could just be a combination of poorly sealed snorkel, intake, blocked or oil filled intercooler/breather, but having sorted all that, I'm stumped. How do I check if the fip has been tweaked? I suppose it's just a case of trial and error to reset factory setting? I'm not 100% happy with the way the boost pipe from fip to turbo is secured, so will replace again, anyone know the ID of this pipe?

Try it with the snorkel disconnected

Yes, my mistake, not enough air. Assuming there are no bockages, I take it this means I still have a leak on the inlet side somewhere? I've tried covering the mushroom top while idling and nothing happened, so will have another look in the morning, after sobering up.

If I cover my snorkle its like turning the key......engine dies immediately.

Cant see its a leak on the inlet side.....a leak can only give you more air Have you replaced the air filter or as said earlier try with the snorkel disconnected?

Have you checked the small bore pipe from the turbo to the f.i.p?

Yes, disconnected snorkel but smoke remained for the duration of my driving escapades..the small boost pipe seems okay, although I'm suspicious of the connection with other pipe at turbo end. Need ref number for this clamp(?) and think I'll replace the pipe with a silicon one of similar bore.

Cant see it being the boost signal pipe as if this had an air leak the pump would correct the fuel supply and the car would be more gutless than normal!
As said any air leak into the inlet trunking wont cause any running problems like on a petrol car but will cause problems under water.

Okay, I changed the air filter, as it was fairly dirty and have run it without the snorkel all day. Have checked fuel line and return also. I noticed the banjo unions on the fip don't all have copper washers, although there are no leaks..back to the drawing board
