Well i am not having much look with my newly bought Rangy. It is the 2.5 DSE on a R Reg Plate in the York area

Going to a friend tonight i had only gone a few miles and the rev limit was running at 3500rpm and would not seem to drop a gear. So i planted my foot to try and force it, and it kicked out a big puff of black smoke. It then started too loose speed and i could not accelerate any more. I made it to my mates about another 2 miles and eventually turned into his house at 30mph from 60mph.

I tried to restart it to show my mate, but it said the engine has been disabled.

We came back it it 30 mins later and it started. Still kicking out a little back smoke when you put your foot down.

Injectors???

Have you not just described a diesel - slow and dirty... maybe I'm mixing it up with a good woman ...:D

Unlikely to be injectors unless the mileage is very high. Overheating, split turbo hoses, EGR valve stuck if it has one, MAP pipe dropped off or the MAF has failed, again if it has one.

it has 158k on the clock. when i bought it, it did have 4 re conditioned injectors in it. hence me thinking. i replaced the thermostat on it last week as there was not one in it. SO perhaps it was getting warm, but when i put my heat gun on it, i only got 90 degrees on the pipes.

shall check all hoses etc and other items. thanks

but if i start it now, it will probably run ok, till i try to kick down or put it under some load.

ps and i am thinking the oil could be low in the box hence the gear box now working to great. so perhaps it is worth changing oil etc. and start to eliminating things.

dont mind spending a few quid on it, just hope i get a good product in the end

tell us what the needle points at when it idles?

Mine points at 275 which i believe is to low for a straight six. I dont think the rev counter is accurate as the turbo spools up and kicks in at around 1400, which is too low, under hard acceleration. 30mph in 4th mine will sit at 800. Interestingly mine, like yours, limits at 3500. (which in reality is probably red line)

does it have a psi box or have the clusters been replaced in it's lifetime? I think the issue on mine is with my rev counter rather than anything else. It sounds like its working pretty hard at 3500. And before any one points out it is a diesel cluster not a petrol. With 5 numbers not 6.

The black smoke is normal, its just clearing all the ****e, crud, mating insects, oil and carbon out the turbo. As long as its not thick black or any other colour smoke it's fine. To help the turbo, idle for 30 secs after starting to lube it up and before you switch off idle for 20-30 secs for it to cool and up to 1min after a hard/uphill drive.

Mine will kick out sludge to when worked hard - great for tailgaters and those who park too close in the car park.

Thanks for the reply. I am not srue what box is on it as i have only just got it and got no history. Got it as a reposition vehilce so felt i got a good price with it having no history.

got the car booked in with a guy who will have a look. hopfully not charge me to look. he actually has a bmw 525 in as we speak, so he thinks it is the same.

the only reason why i am concern is the loss of power. Would not go above 50 and seemed to get worse.

went out today and it seemed ok, but never drove it hard.

not sure

Hopefully your guy is not just 'a guy' but a diesel specialist...you'll end up spending more money on stuff that doesn't need fixing. Ideally you need to speak with someone like Diesel Bob or Diesel Dave in Croydon who have plenty of knowledge of the M51 engine. 9/10 they can point you to the problem over the phone.

He is a mate or a mate, and i dont think he would rip me off. but i shall check before i send it there what his experience is etc. my problem with the guys you have mentioned is they are no where near me and would they really help me if i would never go down that far.

the engine sounds sweet as a nut. just when it gets warmed or booted it has issues. Perhaps i should change all serviceable things etc. filter and injectors. (only got 4 injectors mind) the glow plugs look brand new. gear box oil very clean, but not sure why it takes ages for it to change gear.

It is over fuelling. Put it on diagnostics and see what comes up. If nothing on diag it is mechanical.Too much fuel not enough air. Leaking injector. Blocked intercooler. Internally delaminated turbo hoses, Etc Etc Etc.
