Bloke in the pub wants rid of his 91 90, very original, fsh 87K etc etc and wants a grand for it – he’s given it to me for 24 hours to see what its like as it’s been sitting in his garage for a while

For that money I’ll almost certainly have it off him – the only issue is that there’s a chirping squeaky noise coming from the gearbox/bell housing area. It’s not audible whilst moving with the clutch pedal down and only always audible when it’s accelerating – at a steady speed its usually not there – there’s no apparent clutch slip and when bringing up the clutch pedal there’s a bit of a clunk but the take up is nice and progressive and the bite point is at a sensible place.

Am I right to think it’s likely to be the release bearing and arm doing this? – so it’s new clutch/bearing/arm time for it?

a grand and 4 pints of Guinness isnt giving it away - well not quite

and here's me wanting to knock him down a bit cos it's got a dodgy clutch

I dunno where exactly the bell housing bit is that you're talking about, but it could be your transfer that's going. Is it a squeeky swashy sound like a huge rubber belt on a pully?

ermmmm ..... you'll be telling me the rubber band that it's powered by has perished next

Hey Pos the bell housing it's in the middle, sort of, and has a small bell in it that rings when you press the accelerator and tell the go faster fairies to sprinkle magic dust into the Injection pump to make the vehicle go faster.

ah finally someone who knows what they are talking about is here ......

Oooooooh don't get techy just cos no ones answered yer question.

Yis its likely to be yer clutch bearing an I wunt worry about it till it starts making a lot more noise. There's a slight chance it could just happen to be the crankshaft bush thingie an might be more costly to sort out if it gets worser.

Tell me bout it!!!! changed all the belts the other week, got rid off chirpin', Chirpin' back again!!! Was under the bus doin' swivel ball greasin' and noticed the new alternator belt frayed tae buggery:eek: Pulley has a bit of a crack on it and also noticed when runnin' at certain speeds, it has a slight wobble. Got new Pulley, bush thingy and another new belt coming on Friday (cost- just over £100-ish), so that should maybe sort it:D

I aint going to tell ye that the big rubber band that drives your car is going to snap. Just a mate of mine had a similar sound to the one you describe, and it turned out to be part of the mech in his transfer box
