howdy,

im 17 and im in the process of doing up my 1988 90. i am due to go to billing this weekend to see what deals i can pick up on wheels and tyres, but i would like to know what is the biggest size tyre i can fit on without needing spacers? i was looking at 265's on 16 inch modulars. but i feel the need to go up to 275's. is this possible??

any info on this would be gratefully recieved.

cheers guys

max

There's a limit to how wide a tyre you can fit before you start to look like a prat. You won't gain any offroad ability by putting over fat rubber on but you probably will get pulled by the law a bit more often:D

I use 265's on mine and i do a lot of driving round in farmers fields, i like the slightly wider tyre coz i think it causes less surface damage to the fields and surface damage means compensation in what i do! I drove around all day in torrential weather last week over some very soft bits of bodmin moor and am quite glad i had slightly wider tyres, else i think i would have done quite a lot more sinking!

i used to run 238/85/16 all terrains theese are the perfect size for the 90 as they give you a 2" lift over standard tyres,i now run 265/75/16 insa turbo special track tyres same as simex, theese are the best tyres in mud ive ever used and will not get rid of them for all the tea in china, but they do catch on full lock and do bottom out on the arches pretty often

i wouldnt go over 265/75 without a lift. if you only use it on the road (which you shouldnt ever do) then you could go slightly bigger. Fit a 2" lift and you can go big. wouldnt go over 33" then though as you start messing with transmission and putting on alot of strain. im running 255/85 BF MT's (~33" x 10.5ish wide) with terrafirma 2" lift suspension and it is great.

speak to devon 4x4 at the show as they know their stuff about what will and wont work on a stock/slightly modified set-up. also worth looking at terrafirma kit from frogs island as they come highly recommended too. thier 2" lift kit is the same price as **** part and those procomp things. shop around at billing and go straight to the autojumble (if there is one?) as you may pick up the right thing cheap before anyone else.

cheers lads, lot of info in only one evening! i guess hughesy is right, i will look a prat if i go too big. where i live its mostly gravel and loose ground everywhere, not realy much mud, so sinking shouldnt happen too often hopefully. i think i might stick with my choice of 265's then. but likewiltshire landyman says, will these catch whilst turning? or would i need spacers?

griffdowg is a legend, thanks.

Spacers will fack your bearings, if you find they do rub on full lock, you can adjust the steering stops to stop it. you get slightly less turning radius, but it saves you modifying heavier.

like ve says you can adjust the stops but at the best of times the turning circle is like a world war 2 aircraft carrier to reduce this would annoy the hell outta ya,mine only catch on full lock as they have massive nobbles on for the mud,im sure all terrains wouldnt catch

WM quite correct. i had grizzly claws (****, dont buy them) and the wider side/edge nobbles caught on the radius arms on full lock (much like your insa's) when i put BFG mud terrains on, the rub didnt occur. so it depends on what style tyre you fit and if they have been adjusted before.

Spacers don't knacker your bearings, generaly lack of maintenance and abuse knackers your bearings, and 265 75 16's will fit without spacers but you lose some of the steering lock, hence their fitment is mainly to fit wider tyres and keep full steering lock unafected

Bull****, they put extra strain on the bearings that they wernt designed to take.

Not true, they only do this if the change the intended offset by a significant amount. If you put alloys on, the bearings will compliment the offset and mean the strain is closer to as intended with the bearing set-up. If you use spacers which offset beyond the intended amount, they will put an undue strain on the bearings which might make them wear a bit quicker.
