Big Problems

When the oil is coming out of the dipstick hole is the oil filler cap on, try it with the cap off and see how much oil mist an pressure is coming out of there it could be the filler cap gauze stuff is bunged up with cack. I'm just trying to make you feel better reeely.

Hello,

Over this last week I've noticed my 2.5 N/A starting to rev up a little higher on its own (ie. running on own oil), so I've had a good look at it today. The things blasting oil out of the dip stick tube and hissing if I leave my finger over it. It's also blowing out of the oil filler cap really heavily. It's worse than it was before I stripped it down, de-glazed it and fitted new piston rings a few months ago.

What's wrong with it? Surely my new parts haven't worn away already? Is there something else that could be potentially causing the problem (ie. blocked oil pump)?

If it looks like my engine is worn again, I wont think twice about selling it, but I am reluctant to think that new pistons, with new rings, each in deglazed cylinders can have wrecked themselves after three months

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

duz that answer yo Q,Grunt?

I'm in the **** again. I thought these engines were supposed to be bomb proof. Will see if I can trade it in against a 200 tdi tomorrow (cos the gearbox is on its way now too), if not, I'll be stripping it down and fixing her back up this coming weekend.

Just whilst I remember, I've been told that there is like an 'o-ring' or something similar behind the oil pump, or in the block where it is powered by the cam. Is it possible that this thing has moved over, causing a build in pressure or anything daft like that?

I think I've got another rebuild on me hands.

If it was all it would do is leak engine oil back into the sump, the same oil it would have sucked 1/2 a second before out of the sump, so that would not build up any pressure; its not adding anything to the system, combustion gases however are an addition and cause pressure.

I think the key here would be to find out WHY this happened, a complete rebuild is probably unnecessary, unless more damage has been caused by a wrongly inserted shell etc... You may find it is just one cylinder causing this problem.

By the way POS, next time your under the bonnet have a look at your rad for me let me know what its like, do the input/output pipes sit straight or does the top one have a bend in it, is there space on the top drivers/engine side of the rad for a thermoswitch, and how many other connections etc are there. (cough - photo - cough).

Here you are sir:

Why thank you kind sir.

Well that expains the problem, other 2.5's I have seen sit like mine with the themrostat housing sitting with the output facing the passengers side front corner of the engine bay. The rad they sent me would suit your setup as it has the bend... I guess I could rotate the top of my housing and get a top hose as fitted to yours.

Yes... I fitted a new bulkhead over the easter weekend. Don't think it will stay looking that clean for much longer.

4 days, it took me about a day and a half to get the old one out, that was working 9 till 6ish; it would have been quicker if I had started with the angle grinder and bolt cutters first rather than try and undo things.

Once the bulkhead was in place, bolted onto the outriggers and sills it all just sort of started to come together quite quickly. I spent a lot of extra time fibreglassing and painting the footwells in/outside and painting the heater box, brackets and steering parts, filling the channel sections with waxoyle etc as I went, but then again that really is the only way to do it.

Have a search back till about easter and you will see all the pics.

Is that 5mm above the H mark? Theres L....N...H...........Danger on the dip stick isn't there? I remember a post about this quite a while back, it was recomended that some oil should be removed so that it sits inbetween the N....H mark. Someone managed to suck the oil out through the dipstick hole with a flexible plastic tube. No idea if it will help. Hope its not as bad as you first thought...Good luck Pos.

Cheers,

Well the worse case scenario is that I have to take the head and sump off, turn around my incorrect con rod and then put her all back together with new rings on that one piston!

Not that bad really, will be interesting to see what state the piston haesd are in after their first 1,500 miles
