Came out of Tesco's this afternoon and noticed a ticking noise, thought "damn, another blooming prop shaft bearing", got a couple of hundred yards down the road and bang, nasty low end rumble, so immediately stopped the engine - had it recovered to the garage.

It is definitely the big end - so, roughly, what would you expect to pay for the fix by a reasonable mechanic and how long should it take?

(Bit annoyed actually as I checked her over yesterday - including plugging in the Faultmate - and the oil/water was fine, just needed a little transmission oil)

brgs £20 ,but engine out and depends on crank condition and whether brg was due to longtime wear or other fault £400-£2000

I shall have to wait and see then :( it had new bearings 5k miles ago when the engine was re-built - so not sure what caused this...

If it was definatly a bang you heard then improperly torqued bigend bolts. Snapped bigend bolt caused by over torquing. Bolt backed off caused by not being torqued at all.

Spent the day stripping the 'bits' around the engine, ready for dragging it out tomorrow (blooming cold), bolt seems to have sheared of the flywheel, plus noticed quite a lot of play on the water pump, so a few new bits already needed before we have looked inside the engine. Definitely something wrong though, bit clonky whilst manually turning the engine to get at the gearbox bolts....

Sounds like you have stretched a conrod. One bolt either backed off or snapped and bigend cap has bent outwards under load. Or maybe detached altogether.

Should be able to check & replace the big end shells by dropping the sump and not removing the engine. Obviously, if the bearing journal on the crank is shot, the engine will have to come out.

OK guys - you will like this.....

Engine out now.

In the process of removing said engine, it was noted that one of the four bolts securing the flywheel to the torque converter on the transmission was missing....

It appears that said bolt was tumbling around the bell housing like a ball bearing in a washing machine - the only damage it did was to bend the fly wheel sensor.

As the engine is now out, the big ends have been checked for torque etc. and everything is in order.

An interesting fault, as everyone who heard her run, automatically said "big ends"....

Anyway, engine on its way back into vehicle, new sensor on order plus water pump (as that was showing signs of wear).

Result me thinks (although the whole thing could have been done with the engine in place - but everone was sooo damn sure it was big ends)

Very unusual that one. Anyway bloody good result. I think the "Bigend gone on 4.6 HSE P38" thread title may have diverted us up the wrong path somewhat.:cool::cool:

Not really Wammers - if you had heard the engine running, you would have said it was the Big Ends too

Maybe, maybe not. Have had a lot of practice at that sort of thing. Started on a ramp with a steth would have isolated the noise, even if the odds of guessing what it was, it being pretty unusual, might have been a job for William Hill.

Ok - she is running again - new flywheel sensor and water pump - bit of a git cos the bolt had mullered a couple of the tangs on the flywheel that go each side of the sensor, so some new ones welded on - started her up and there was life - revved her up and a tinkling noise, rough as a badger arse - a couple more tangs had come off, but more plate and welding replacing tangs, checked all others and could not see any more 'dodgy' tangs - so took her for a 100 mile motorway trip and she is still running.

So what did it cost me? - The parts plus a couple of days labour - got off lightly I think..

Which reminds me Tiny of the time Paddy comes over to England to buy a car but only has 15 Quid ....He goes to several Car dealers who all tell him to **** off ....Eventually he goes to a small garage just outside Hollyhead The owner don't have owt that cheap but directs him to a farmer down the road .....

Off Paddy sets & gets to the farmers house ..he too has nowt..... but says he can let him have a "Horse Buggy" fer a tenner but Paddy has no horse to pull it .. so the farmer says he has 2 6 FOOT CHICKENS he'll let him have fer a Fiver.......

Paddy is extatic!!! & hitches the 6 FOOT CHICKENS to the buggy & sets off down the road.....Stopping at a set of traffic lights outside Hollyhead a car pulls up next to him & blasts his horn ....This scares the **** outta the Chickens & they tears off their Bridles & ****s off down the road.........Leaving Paddy sitting at the lights in just the Buggy...

At that moment a Police car pulls up & asks Paddy whats the problem ....

Paddy explains that this car blasted its horn & frightened his 6 FOOT CHICKENS & they ran away ..............

Policeman says he's never heard such bull**** in all his life & HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHATS WRONG

PADDY'S BIG HENS HAD GONE

SORRY Magic ...Could not resist that one mate !!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
