Hi Guys,

I have a problem getting from 5th to 4th gear only on my R380 and have to punch it into 3rd first before going back to 4th, via the search on here have diagnosed as bias plate... However I only have the problem when I am moving, when stationary I am able to select gears perfectly is this normal. I also have no reverse lights and have changed the switch with a fully tested working unit but it seems the selector is not pushing the switch inside the gearbox... are my issues related or unrelated is my question. Any ideas from any of you gearbox guru's?

You could take it apart and have a look inside to see if something's come loose inside ?

Reverse switch is just a spring loaded lever thing, there's pics on my disco to defender spec gearbox thread

Cheers guys sorry for delay but no Internet for the last few days.... With try and get a bias plate and see if that's the selection prob, and whilst there will have a root around to investigate the lever for reverse selection!

It is the 4th gear synchro retainer broken, something where the synchro ring slips around the gear itself.

Quite common on early r380, it needs a full rebuild so just live with it IMO!

hmmm maybe I will have to get it into a gearbox specialist to have a wee look and see can anybody recommend anyone in North Hertfordshire?

if it was the retainer spring for syncro pads it would be difficult to select at all times ,bias plate function can be judged by pushing gear lever over to one side and seeing if it returns to 3rd 4th alignment ,if it doesnt its either broken or needs adjusting (and it does need to be spot on for could gear selection ),other faults could be worn baulk ring or too much end float inbetwen input and mainshaft

we have a 220k 110 300 here at the moment that has this problem, it shifts from third to fourth no problem but wont shift from 5th to 4thy without offering it into third first

double clutching helps which made me think it was the synchro issue

there is info about it on ashcroft website also

Mr Noisy... sounds like you know your stuff.. will forget the bias plate and live with it and maybe look at a recon at some point.

it would be baulk ring but not a "retainer or spring issue

I would say you are on the right lines.

Bias plate issues can make it awkward to 'find' the gear but if you are lined up correctly and it just won't go in then you have the r380 4th gear synchro problem and it wants a rebuild.

Cheers :)

Along a similar line to this post, would i be right in thinking that i have a baulk ring problem on mine the symptoms are; I cannot get into 4th from any other gear when i'm above about 1200revs. I can sometimes get it into get at this speed but its definitely not a smooth change by any means. All other gears are ok (it jumps out of 2nd gear sometimes). I just wana check with you guys first but i reckon i will be getting a recon from ashcroft soon. Also anyone want to fit it :) :)
