"Best" way to spend £10k

Lets say, hypothetically you had £10k to spend on a rr. General use, probably not garaged, at least to begin with, max 5k a year but to include getting about in very inclement weather (so not a garage queen when it snows or is very wet)

Now "best" covers a multitude of stuff - least unreliable, cheapest to run (ok least expensive to run), depreciation, best to drive, most capable etc etc

So :
Option A is a very nice Classic - probably late model V8 vogue/LSE with air

Option B is a V8 Vogue L322.

Either may be LPG driven, it would depend on the individual vehicle.

So who would choose what?
 
A classic will rot before your very eyes - it looks like L322s aren't going to be that much better in that respect. The P38 is the last of the Rover designed Range Rovers and the last live axle model. I can see them becoming appreciating classics pretty soon. Don't know why you'd bother with LPG with only 5K miles per year - the servicing the system requires would wipe out any mpg advantage at that mileage.

Bide your time and find a nice late P38 4.6 V8 that has had a top-hat liner engine fitted. This will be your best bet for long-term longevity - if not reliability - but then you won't get the latter with any Rangie. Many will say the diesels are great but as a weekend plaything I'd rather have V8 and you'd have to be pretty unlucky for a 4.6 transmission to go - they are very robust - for short journeys in the winter the diesels take too long to warm up.

L322s are better road cars, handle better but some say they lack the character of the P38 and parts cost much, much more. The L322 Diesels are in a different league engine wise to the 2.5 P38.

I had a 89 classic when it was only two years old, I never liked it, the handling was dangerous (rolly polly) and it always had loads of silly problems and it had started to rust by age 3! - I love my (relative to then) much older P38 which has also been far more reliable and pretty much rust free - horses for courses I suppose! You'll find lovers of every variant on here standing up for their favourite flavour of Range Rover.
 
I'd like to think i'd go for a later model classic, especially if it could be garaged. But if practicality comes into it then i'd agree a late P38 4.6 V8, keep it in top condition & hope it does reach some kind of classic status.
No character with a German L322. Sorry :(
 
I'm shocked at the lack of love for classics and the liking for P38s. I thought everyone thought they were a disaster waiting to happen.
I'd like an L322 but they seem to be falling in price daily and I just wonder if a decent, rebuilt at that price, classic wouldn't be better.
I must admit there is something timeless about a good classic.
Anyone else watch reruns of Lovejoy just to see the rangies or is it just me?
 
I'd love a Classic - something like a '95 softdash. Not as a general runner. If the local council would let me build a garage on our listed building a classic would be the first thing to fill it. In the end i opted for a P38 as i wanted something close to modern 4x4's i've had previously & the P38 has this to a degree but still has the connection with a genuine Rover, something i personally think the L322 has lost to German influence.
