Hi All

Just had to strip dowm my compressor pump.

I fitted new teflon seals last year, was working great.

just wont rise anymore, so had a mooch, to find that the piston has scored the Aluminium barrel and worn away some part of the barrel causing a lip effect inside.#

Sooooooooooo, looking to replace, refurb?

Island 4x4 doing a new Dunlop unit for £137 + vat for my hard earned, seems the cheapist, and i have used them before .

Any advice most welcome.

:D

I fitted a Dunlop pump last year. Works fine. Original pump had rear bearing failure.

LW.....

tricky one.

do I pay £99 for the kit, and fiy myself?, or get a factory built one with warranty for £165?

its not the fitting, its a waranty and having piece of mind thing, plus the person that assembled the new has done it a few times more than me.

plus if its the origanal, it been on since 1998 over 114k miles!
so any final thoughts?

£99 for the kit? Last time I looked it was about £35 with a cylinder.

Personally I would buy the new pump and the re-furb kit, then refurb the old pump and sell it on Ebay.

I had the same sort of thoughts. The original pump lasted 100,000 miles and about ten years so I reckoned one more, with a new set of Arnott bags, would probably see the old girl out.

I'll get round to refurbing and selling the old pump one day. I know it's a good 'un but I fitted one of those useless Dutch seals.

I had the same problem as you last year, and i opted for a new one from Island 4x4.
Not had a problem since with it,and yes the warranty swung it for me :D
Ive ordered a few things with them since and its always been delivered within 24 hours, and no i dont work for them ;)

Keith, great idea, will.order the island 4x4 one with a Warranty
Then
Get a new piston with gubbins etc, sell it ...
Job done ....
Plus the misssis is getting cheesed of in the dodgem.

Cheers for input

I bought a new compressor from Island 4x4, great service... Fitted in 10 mins, no reset required, started her up, left with door open for a minute, rose up nicely...... Job done, all for £137 & vat, with a warranty.... Plus might buy a rebuild kit and sell the old one........ ;)

Just an update I fitted a second generation teflon seal to my pump 26 months ago.It came from Goswin at Landroverwinkel.nl.It was fitted in a barrel which had very light scoring. This had given sterling service, including some long periods of running due to air bag leaks.Goswin posted on this site last week, about another subject, and I gave him possitive feedback about his product. He offered me his latest seal kit, which includes a barrel and O rings,FOC,for trial. This arrived last Friday and was fitted on Saturday,it came with downloadable fitting instructions which for anybody who doesnt have mechanical experience would be very easy for them to follow. The seal I removed showed some distortion to the lip in two places,in line with the thrust side of the piston.this I put down to running hot when the airbags were leaking. The seal was stilll operating normally and would not have needed to be changed under normal circumstances. With the new kit fitted it seems a little quieter in operation.Only time will now tell if it lasts as long as the old seal,I have no reason to believe that it wont.Ill keep you posted if anything untoward happens.Regards
