what are the best 4x4 cars today, or in the recent past? i personally have owned a trusty toyota hi-lux, 2.2d if i remember correctly, it was a beast of a thing, indestructable, as top gear have demonstrated, it was an R plate, and really horrible to drive, im not kidding, i wanted one for so long, and now i wish i hadnt bothered :( , and a mitsubishi shogun on a s plate, was a good car but a but girly

now my wife has a freelander 2.0td td4 5 door serengetti, altough id rather have bought one of its bigger siblings, its my pick out of the 3, you?

depend what yer want outta it, as for that top gear 'indestructable' con. you could do that with almost any doosul and get the same results

uni-mog by merc.....goes anywhere over anything, thru anything, and the diesel will run on cat pee. prone to rollovers tho, bit the most rugged chassis i have eva come across

thats what im saying, a lot of people just use theres to run about town so obviously comfort, safety, economy etc are the big factors so theyll maybe like the landcruiser for example, my perception of the best off roader is the defender i think, the one that all the farmers use, the hi-lux is used all over the world in the harshest climates, the desert, the arctic, i think for a dure workhorse that has to be the hardiest motor there is,

anyone disagree?

agree to a certain extent, but u can be sure that where eva u go in a toyota on this planet, a landy has been there already.

is that the small boxey thing, similar looking to the defender kind of? im sure i saw it on top gear a few year back, it was immpressive, dont see a lot of them though? they mostly sold abroad then?

thing i like about a landy [the early ones anyway] is its built with one thing in mind....to go where most others cant. once they got the vehicle they wanted they decided..ok...now where do we put the driver....most other 4x4's are designed with driver comfort in mind first.....dont care about that....gimme a car that goes where i want it to go....no frills attached

The Volvo xc90 is not a bad vehicle although does not compare to that of Land Rover. However as Slob previously said it's what you want to use it for".However a vehicle is only as good as the person who is driving it .
Any one can get a vehicle stuck and then pass adverse comments about it.

L200 have far far too much overhang from the axles and really limits what it can do, specially as you see them all with standard road tyres on anyway and feeble alloy wheels wich could easily be bucked, on the otherhand i wouldnt say no to a crew cab pick, mega work horse/tool like my mates animal. very versitile.
