Best gear box oil

Whats the best oil for a LT77 (early disco if it matters)?

Mine was working well untill i did an oil change and put EP-80 in it, now it grindes like a Gaylander on a rock crawl section.

The oil that came out of it was much thinner, anyone else have this problem, or have i just put the wrong oil in? Haynes says its fine.

You WALLY! Don't drive it until you've changed it again!

It should be ATF Dexron II or better... EP80/90 is waaaaayyyy too thick.

If I were you, I'd fill it with cheap Dexron II ATF, drive it around the block and then drain it yet again before filling it with some decent Dexron III stuff.

Wait a sec... exactly which bit of the 'gearbox' did you fill with 'EP80'...

You know there's two boxes right? The mainbox (LT77) which needs ATF and the Transfer Box (LT230) which needs EP80/90 or EP90?

Don't get 'em the wrong way around FFS!

I just chucked it in the transfer box and gear box. Thought it was a nice little service for it.

Heres the realy good bit. I changed the oil as id just put a nice new transfer box in, to go with the nice new gear box. That was over 1000 miles ago.

Apparently im as thick as EP-80.

I guess thats why its been getting so hot too.

make sure the hypoid oil for the trans/box says gl4 on the container not gl5
gl5 is ok for axles
gl4 is ok for trans/box and axles

Sorted now, flushed out the EP-80 and have filled it with good quality ATF, smooth as ever. Thanks for the guidance.
