am wanting to buy a nice little fixer upper to go off roading if.
If am honest i would like a 90 but they are bit to expensive for me at the mo.
i know i could get a cheap disco. but would like to know if there is any thing else out there worth putting some time into

thanks

I was going to suggest a disco 1 as it's very capable, not ancient and it is also quite affordable for people with low budgets. I see you already have a Disco 2 though, so you may not like having to adjust to a Disco 1.

If you bought a 90, you'd most likely respect the fact that it's a totally different vehicle, and you'd probably respect it for what it is. With that in mind, a 90 is probably your best bet.

i understand that 90 can be pure beast off road, but how good are series 3 just no one i know has one so never seen one in action

In stock form they're almost as good as a Defender, thing that lets them down is less ground clearance as the spring hangers get hooked up, less articulation and less power. All those things can be addressed by bigger tyres, Parabolic springs and engine swaps. do as much or as little as you want. Parts are cheap as chips.
I've almost taken my Series as far as it will go, the only things I'd want to fit now are lockers.
I'll go anywhere any other Landy will go and sometimes places they won't.

You'll be surprised just how capable a Series land Rover is.:D

series all the way mate .... ive got 2 and can go where the defenders go ...ok ive got a few little ground clearance problems but if you get a nice taxed exempt one youll be laffing maybe some "pair oh bollocks springs" will add to the landy ...

I,ve got a 200 TDI Disco for pure offroading and its awesome !.

Its only got 750x16 SAT tyres on and no other mods.

If you want to start playing " Landrover Top Trumps " then yes, the Series/ Defenders numbers are better than the Disco,s, but in the real world of offroading, the D1 is very good. ( shame most of them were made of rust though ! ).

that puts me off the older discos. its not the boot floor or the sills its just getting a good chassis to build around. it is not worth gettin a new one for an old disco. so would have to look for a good one.

DIsco chassis tend not to rust - at least less than defender chassis anyway. Not sure why tho - maybe the body is sacrificial?

so as long as a good strip down of rust and bit prep and woud be all right. so the discos are good off road, defo worth thinking about

The chassis on my " L " plate Disco is sound, with no major corrosion. It was just the body thats shot.

Theres companys out there that do a 2 seater pick up style body conversion for the D1, as the chassis, drivetrain and engine are all sound components.

( and before any one does a poo in thier pants, there is some not to rusty D1,s about ).

my r plate was mint no rust, the k plate aint bad either only had the inner wings done wheel arches n boot are fine so yes there are some

Only driven afew discos, they seemed bulky and loaded with needless gadgets. My 90 isfairly standard but a very capableoff roader, used in the fields(steep and slippery yum yum!)every day.Love it.Over the years also had quite a few series2&3.I thought they were as good as my90 tho diffrent strengths and weaknesses.Nothing wrong with leaf springs at all.My mate used to have86"with aV8and dumper tyres and Icant imagine what would be better short of atractor etc.
