Started reassembling the main shaft.

New needle rollers, hub springs, and baulk rings, & pilot bearing fitted on.

Had a look at the Provent setup today, and it's keeping the inlet a LOT cleaner but there's still some trace oil.

One thing I hadn't thought about was that leaving the drain hole open is allowing air to back feed up and through into the breather, so I need to get that sealed up by feeding it into a catch can to ensure full effect.

The filter side has a good film of black gunge already so is doing it's job.

I'm sat at 435 miles so far and am just about to enter the orange. Usually I'm good for another 30 miles before I bottle it... so fingers crossed I won't run out of fuel on the work trip in the morning which is 25 miles.

I just remembered that the last tank where I got 480 miles just after the previous IC flush I had also added a bottle of injector cleaner to the fuel, and that has a cetane booster in, so may account for the better mileage.

Anyhow, I know I have a very mild exhaust manifold leak, so have a manifold arriving next week, hoping that will help improve low end boost and bump mileage a bit more.
 
I just got 586m before my reserve light came on, surely you should about the same? Although was nearly all motorway driving at 63 mph

32 inch muds, 2 inch lift and heavy remap take their toll mate :)

Looking at your avatar you look ot have stock size tyres so you're not actually getting that mileage, it's over reporting. And mine under reports because the tyres are bigger.

Done loads of stuff that I forgot to add in too. Before I got the D2 I'd never done a thing with cars, not even an oil change, dunno why I've always had a way with mechanical stuff :)


And now you're doing gearbox and transfer box rebuilds. You learn fast :eek:

Hoping to have it done before my France trip early August.

In real terms it just needs a steady day with a press to reassemble it.

Then the tbox needs stripping down and rebuilding.

Swapover is a days job at my mate's who has a 4 poster lift.

Wouldn't hurt to speed me up if you had a date you need the box by.... :)
 
Also, bottled it on the way to work and filled up the tank with 430 miles on the clock.

Put 80 litres in so with hindsight would've easily made it to work. (430 / 80) * 86 = 462.25 miles [86 litres being my usual fill up]

Conclusion is that the provent HAS made a positive difference, payback period looks like about 6 months.

I threw a bottle of diesel redex into the tank as an experiment to see what mileage increase versus added cost there is. There's a BP garage just being built near me so I'm intending to run on BP Ultimate when it opens. Using Texaco plain old dino diesel at the mo. I don't trust supermarket fuel.

Do NOT need it at all, unless I razz my old box instantly with these new "no prisoners" axles :p

July/August would be sweet for me actually

Not sure I agree re tyre size and mpg. Where I worked out the mpg it's just slightly over the suggested combined average. Bearing in mind I did 500miles of the 586 on the motorway. Also, if they work out the miles and therefore also speed on stock tyres, what the heck would they use. Besides, compared to other posts, I'm about average, with some guys getting great mileage. So either way, I'm still pleased! Great post, your attention to detail in fantastic!

It's pretty well known that the stock wheel/tyre combo under reports, check it out by seeing what speed your GPS thinks you are actually going when your clock says 70, it should be a few % under.

On mine when my clock says 70 I'm actually doing ~5% more.

Another way to check it would be to compare your trip miles against something like google map miles on a longer trip.

One thing to note, there were different tyre/wheel size options from the factory all of which had slightly different circumferences - I'd suggest that LR went with a corrected MPG value based on the values they programmed into the instrumentation.

Not that it matters a whole bunch :) I'm not expecting brilliant mileage due to all the mods I've done, but I do want to try get the most I can.
 
UK construction and use regs say a speedo should be within 10% between 20 and 90mph.

EU regs add that speedos should not show a speed that is lower than the actual speed of the vehicle. So if you are doing 70mph, your speedo should read between 70 and 77. LR will have used this as their start point.

Did you check those turbo oil seals?

Had the the pipes off and there's no more oil, so I'm pretty sure all the oil that was there before was being introduced via the breather, I can't see how a leaking turbo seal would shoot oil up the inlet against airflow?

Haven't physically dismantled the turbo to eyeball the seals though as you can imagine.
