hi there about to start my 200tdi conversion, bought a whole disco, so i have the gear box for it, question being, should i use the bell housing off of the series gear box or the disco one to save having to drill holes, is it a straight swap ? is the disco bell housing deeper ??

and secondly would the disco gear box fit straight in ?, i want to use the disco diffs anyway.....

some info on bell housing configuration would be really usefull

regards Luke

you can try disco one,but id just remove studs that dont line up ,and fit gear box as is theres more than enough studs left to do the job

Disco box will end up with the gear lever between the seats ....

Defender LT77 to end up with it a more convential spot ...the bellhousing/input gears could possibly be swapped BUT it would be a world of pain to do IMHO .

Defender LT77 still needs prop shaft mods to fit in a series 88
i wasnt been serious about bell housing ,you couldnt fit lt77 one on a sereies box:)

right so im using the series box i get that, and you say i should just use series bell housing as well ? and just remove a few studs ?
i just read somewhere that there are some bolts that arent for support but actually serve a purpose like for crank seal or something ??

right so thats solved that !

in terms of set up with engine mounts, whioch ones should i use ? and secondly do i need some better rubber bushes for the greater vibrations ?
really appreciate the knowledge

ah right, you see this is why i need the input as i have a 19j in mine atm, well i did have anyway, so i think my mounts should be set up right ? and as for rad i have a 200 one already installed, with regard to the intercooler, should i need it ? will it strain engine more ? or is it just there for performance.

it will give some extra performance but wont be necessary as it will give more than enough power, disco turbo can be a bit close to chassis ,i have fitted td turbo to tdi before ,takes a little fettling

i would like to know what benefit too ?

how could i play around with ehaust to use my 19j exhaust set up i already have ?

He did it to save taking studs out I think, as all/more of them fitted properly on the 19j flywheel housing than the 200tdi one so theoretically should be better

Take 19j flywheel housing off and fit that to the 200tdi, my mate did this in his defender and it worked out ok

It bolted up fine (2.5 N/A, not 19J), but it did cover up the hole for the wading plug due to it being on the back of the N/A housing and the 200tdi sump sitting lower. Didn't realise this until after I had the engine in and running lol

so what are we saying yes or no to using td housing ? and yes i will be going off road ! and will be using wading plugs where possible

ill go for your suggestion with the 19j back plate thing !, as some one keeps going on about the four bolts at the bottom and how important they are ??
one final thing, how would i check if my gear box oil or crank seal is leaking ? bell housing is black and i just hope it was my old 19j
