I bought a BECM for £1 off eBay...one of those bid a pound and see what happens things that you end up winning.

It's not guaranteed to work, but I thought I'd keep it in case I need a replacement relay or some such in the future. And at that price I'm interested in just looking inside without buggering up the one in the car!

It's from the same MY as my own, and looking inside it's actually very clean with no corrosion or dirt even.

Anyway, I'm curious now to see what my Nanocom would read from it. If I powered it up and only connected the diagnostic connectors up (Connector C255), do you think it would tell me anything.....or set fire to my car?

You will need more than a Nanocom to make it work on your car.

You do to use it in the car....

I was just thinking of seeing if it fired up and told me it's VIN etc. I'm just curious to see what it might tell me, but I don't want to knacker my car either!

If I ever needed to use it, it'd have to go to Rick-the-Pick for re-programming.

You can use the whole top board complete,its only the lower board that contains all the coded / mileage sensitive bits,easier than trying to desolder relays etc.(And in my experience the bottom board is OK in most cases)
 
And if I remember correctly locked to the VIN. So if you changed the car you'd be stuffed.

I think you can get a version not locked to VIN but that is aimed at pros and costs even more.

My Faultmate is not VIN locked, I don't have all the software modules, just those for post 99 diesel and yes it was expensive but at the time I was using it for 3 x P38's, the SM035 module was £750 from memory, I decided to leave buying it until I need it:eek:
