Battery types and quality for P38

Cars need lots of current (Amps) to turn the starter motor.

Leisure batteries can't provide the amps.

Car batteries have a CCA ( Cold Crank Amps - I think ) rating. This gives an idea about how much current they can provide to turn over the engine.
Leisure batteries can often provide reasonable current - enough for winches, etc. But if you use them to start an engine, they can overheat. This can damage the battery, or in serious cases, cause it to explode!

First off, don't boats and motorhomes have cuffing great doisel engines? They need crankin' don't they?

And check out the stats... I tink (it's late, I've been on the zoidur and I canna remember hexactly) that I got the XV24 Marine/Leisure battery. 800CCA, that's 'kin plenty. Don't think it'll explode on me, but I'll post pics if it does.

I still maintain that these offer really good value and bloody good specs. But shoot me dahn if you want to...

Leisure batteries are designed for providing a smallish steady current over a long period, and are capable of being pretty well discharged before rechargng again. They're often described as being Deep Cycle batteries.

Car starting batteries are intended to provide a high current (several hundred amps) over a short period. They also prefer not to become too discharged before recharging.

Although the Lead/Acid chemistry is pretty much the same, the way in which the lead plates are arranged inside the battery vary between the two types to give them the characteristics needed for their designed use.

Using a leisure battery on a car to start it will probably buckle the plates inside the battery rendering it FUBAR.

Sorry mate, but I'm not going to let this lie. Surely boat engines need starting... And the battery I've suggested has a CCA rating of 800, that's more than most car batteries.

Ok so what would people recommend for a 4.0 V8?
The book says 72amh, currently there's a 70amh one in there but it's of unknown age and is having to be charged once every month.
I do short journeys every day only 5 or 6 miles each way to work and back again.
