Well i didn't expect that, on holiday in Wales gently plodding down the A465 when i hear something hit the underside of the disco

Look in rear view mirror just to see something bounce off into the verge. Battery light comes on and steering goes heavy. Had a look and the tensioner for the drive belt has disintegrated, totally. There is no wheel at all, just a spindle and a part shredded belt.

No warning at all, ho hum. And on a bank holiday weekend too lol

Bloody landrovers, why do i like them?

Not sure about preventative maintainance being much of a help in this case.
I had exactly the same thing recently. No warning at all just temp in the red, ace light red, steering gone, servo gone. The tensioner had disintergrated, shredding the belt.
Mine is maintained as if my life depended on it, an on your own out in the back of beyond with no CB or telephone it can.
Some things you just cant factor in...**** happens.

Quite right, my water pump bearing failed recently no way to do any PMs on that, and no pre indication untill ithe pump started knocking, lucky for me only two miles from home

I carry a "box" of spares just in case, belts, water pump etc when on long trips, never occurred to me to carry a spare tensioner. Have a spare pully and bearing kit now so naturally, it'll never go again now.
