had the heart sinking feeling today as the red battery light didnt go out. gutted as my 64000 miles on the clock V8 has the expensive water cooled alternator on it. hoped it was number 5 fuse but oh no.

has anyone removed one of these and was it a pig of a job that it looks like to me? after years of repairing my own cars i think i might have to admit defeat on this and get a specialist to do it.

Like a p38 can the bushes on the alternator just be changed? No experience with these new fangled plumbed in ones.

Might be worth confirming it is the alternator with a voltmeter first although its highly likely it is as thats the job of the battery light. Belts are on tight and not slipping? Seems odd to go so soon

belts are fine, first thing i checked, could of coped with changing one of those. i think these have 3 diodes inside that go wonky. i havent got a voltmeter, and no one near me seems to have, dont want to drive the car as it will kill the battery.

have found place in luton that does an exchange unit for £220, so not too terrible. just need an experienced technician to unbolt remove and replace.

brand new alternator from bosch , all fitted and done. and all for £440. main dealer wanted £700 plus vat just for the alternator, you have to love them for trying it on.
