hi y'all. Hoping that someone out there can shed some light on a fairlyconsistent freelander prob. I have the normal slight vibration that occurs at 40 mph, but also a new vibe has developed at 60 onwards. Before you all leap on the diff mounts, vcu mounts, wheel balance course of action, the problem only occured after changing all of the mountings and a recon vcu along with its damper ring. the vibe feels like a wheel out of balance but cant be driven through with higher speed. wheels have been recently re-tyred and balanced and again the problem wasnt there until changing mountings. the propshaft to rear diff joint wasnt split so its not an issueof prop phasing.
lookin forward to some intelligent, new ideas. shaun

same prob with mine since changing VCU, mounts, diff and diff bushings! can't seem to solve it! even put 4new tyres on to no avail..getting garage to put Landrover genuine bearings on VCU to see if it helps?!!

Recon vcu came from David Beaumont 4x4 Gearbox Specialists ,dave beaumont 4x4 gearbox specialists, halifax. gave good service, even with postage out to southern ireland, helpfull and easy to communicate with, unlike some i've read about. Still havent got to the root of the vibe problem yet,.one thing that has occurred to me is that whilst waitin for other parts to arrive, the vcu was lying on the workshop floor for 10 days possibly resting weight on the damper ring. could this have stretched it out of true perhaps?

You haven't got a sticking caliper by any chance - I've had this once before and manifested as a vibration that got continually worse?

Also, I know you've mentioned this only occured after changing a few bushes but possibly when the bushes were worn, the vibration was still happening but you couldn't feel it because the bushes were worn and not transmitting the vibration...

I've certainly had this on cars before that had no vibrations, then I changed the front wishbone bushes which 'showed up' a wheel out of balance...

Thanks for the last thoughts, there certainly could be something on that thread to investigate. front discs are ready for replacement so will check, clean ,polish all pivots at that point. Also have a persistent problem with handbrake sticking shoes to rear drum, an ongoing problem after several stripdowns and cleanouts. Am non the wiser to cause, not the normal delaminating shoes issue, but maybe it has a bearing on the vibration issue. Will carry on trying and researching so more ideas gladly accepted. Thanks Shaun.

If you fitted the prop and vcu your self did you tighten all the bolts progressively and in opposites - even tapping with a hammer to endure it was seated and centralised.

I had a prop problem on a old Opel car many years ago - vibes as you describe - slacked off bolts taped it about a bit and then bit at a time tighten everything back up - problem solved. Worth a go as it's feast to do and costs nothing

Well at last,a brother in arms. I've resisted the urge to hit the bloody thing with a hammer for so long, but at last someone's given me the excuse to vent my rage and frustrations. Looking8 forward to this one. Now then, which size to use, hmmm the straightening out the wrinkles on ricicles one,or better still, the put bastud big dents in the queen Mary one???

No no no don't slam hell out of it - the object is to gently persuade it to centre it self. Tighten the prop bolts evenly and in opposites a bit at a time.

If you are still stuck get your self up to Paddy Buckley in Mallow (every one knows him) he's a whizz with anything with a Land Rover badge. He will take the **** becuase of the freelander but ignore that. He worked wonders on my Disco!

Cheers

it could be you prop bearing are not truely running straight and amay be of-centre try looking to see if you can see where they were before

You have to ask????

What is the world coming to, the bigger the 'ammer the bettererererer it works FFS :D

Back on vibration, check your tyres, it's not unknown for brand new tyres to delaminate, a very easy thing to muck up during production, fortunately very rare, but worth a quick check to make sure they are still round n black :)
