This may be a really bad idea, if it is then perhaps the more informed amongst you could tell me?

I am in the process of rebuilding my Series 3 and have a bit of a galvanised thing going on (Chassis, bulkhead, cappings, bumper, etc). Next likely target for refurbishment is the axles..... and here be the crux of the question... would it be problematic if I got the axle casings galvanised?

I know that I may have to protect the mating faces for diffs and hubs (or maybe not?), but other than that would there be any forseeable problems?

Thanks

every one to there own, but to be honest i think you would be throwing your money away, there would be no advantage to galving your axles. in all my years of working on vehicles ive never come across any axle casing rotting thru as the galving of parts was done to stop rust ie chassis and other bits, but its your project. best regards js

yeah... not really looking at the preservation side of it, just whether to clean up and paint them or just had the idea of them matching the chassis?

Bit of a whim really

There's probably arguments for and against but if you ask me.....OOOH SHINY!

Have you considered chrome?

I can send you a photo of my axle to meet your requirements if so desired...

There is at least one case of axle tube rot, mine.
I allready started a thread on it a while back, the rear axle tube has a bad rust bit right up agains the diff, in my mind enough to weaken the assy, and might be an mot failure.
That said, they usuaully last 30 or 40 years, so galving probably isnt first on the list.
I dont know how the tubes fit on the outer ends, but keep galv away from threads and close fitting parts or it'll not go back 'gether.

Would appreciate it if you could Mikedowson?
Did you just Galvanise the whole casing, or did you mask/clean off the close fitting faces?
any problems after?

Cheers

The strengthening plate on the bottom of my rear axle case rotted away and needed replacing for the last MOT. My local (sadly in enforced retirement) mechanic used to do a lot of landys and said he'd never seen one that bad so it probably isn't common
