Hi
I have always been a fan of your site and hence decide to buy a range, so Iast month I bought a range classic and there started my nightmare. Unfortunately after having paid it 4270 euro (cars are very expensive in Tunisia), I took it to the technical control everything was perfect only they gave me a headache about the chassis number so they stated all type of investigation, they say something is wrong with the entire car numbers from chassis number to weight to model and took away my registration and the car has been inpounded.

First they said the chassis number of a range rover starts with LLH and not SALLH it took one week for me to show them that post 1982 ranges starts with SALLH ( I found this information in a range manual ).

Second they said that the chassis number is not at its right place ( mine is behind the front right wheel on the chassis ).

Third they said the lettering is not perfectly stamped and not deep enough.

Fourth they said the weight on the weight on the registration certificate is not confirm with the weight on the aluminium identification plate in the front of the car under the hood.

This is what says the registration certificate
Make : Land rover
Type : LHABV2
Chassis N° : SALLHABV2AA133467
First day of registation : August 19th 1983
Fiscal power : 20 Horses ( our power system is like the french system, we don't use Horse power)
Empty weight : 1880 Kg
Can carry : 440 Kg
Total authorized weight : 2320 Kg

This is what is existing on the car
The chassis number is the same as above in both the chassis and the aluminium plate, in the chassis there are 2 signs before and after the number they look like a half moon, The lettering shows some disparity, the distance and the height of the letters are not always the same, in the LL the fist L touchs the second, the letters and the numbers does not have a uniform depth.

Makers plate looks OK, not sure about chassis stamping.... but suspect its all immeterial.... my understanding of North African 'red-tape' is its noting to do with the regulations and everything to do with bakshish....
I'd be playing stupid white man & asking who I had to pay the 'registration fees' to!
