Hello Men,

My Commercial Freelander 05 registration has a problem, I use it for work most days, when I can get it to move...

I have taken the vehicle to KWIK-FIT, they checked the brakes and said they were like new?

In the mornings, I start up the engine, handbrake off and the back wheels are jammed solid, I rock back and forth in the seat, pump the brake peddle and the handbrake, heaven knows what my nieghbours must think, nothing much happens until I rev the engine and let out the clutch where I get a bang from the back wheels...

I think this could be damaging the car, any ideas why the back wheel are sticking?

Thank you in advance,

Wilma

Hi Howardo,

It sounds fine when driving, there was a slight grating from the back wheel passenger side after driving through lots of water, but it seems fine now.

How should I go about checking the handbrake and what's the final drive thing?

Thanks,

Wilma :hippie:

The final drive is the rear differential, you can check the oil level in it from the filler plug on the rear face of it, it has a square socket.
When you release the handbrake first thing, reapply it and does it feel like it is being applied or does the handle feel loose.

Ooop's!

Now you mention it, it was mentioned a few months ago that there was a small leak from a seal? in the back wheel axle.

How do i know if there is oil in it and what oil should i use to fill it and where do i top it up, I don't mind doing it myself.

Thanks

Wilma

you can check if it's the brakes by parking it overnight with the handbrake off, but leaving it in gear. if it doesn't happen in the morning then it's brake related. if it does then it's drive train.

good luck

Look under the rear of the vehicle, look on the face of the diff. and look for the filler plug just over half way up, it will have a square socket. With the vehicle level the oil level should be at the level of the filler plug. It takes 80W/90 gear oil to API GL5 spec.

Hi Guys,

I have loads of problems with the handbrake sticking on mine freelander.

The little handbrake leaver at the bottom of the drum does not return when you release to handbrake in the car. One its been in the garage, stripped and cleaned, it ok for about 3-4 months before it starts to stick again.

Last year it was diagnosed as having a duff VCU which cost me 600 Quid fitted. but i think that the real fault was the handbrake sticking.

Definately worth getting your brakes cleaned out!

Thanks

David

Thank you so much, I'll do all the things above and let you know how it Goes!

Thanks

:welcome: :D

Rather than slipping the clutch and shooting off all over the place, the best way to unseize rear brakes is to put the car in third or second, whilst engubebisvrunning SMS then engage the clutch quickly. The car will stall but not before freeing the brakes.

At work, our vehicles are washed at the end of each shift so almost always have some stickiness in rear brakes.

Cheers

hi wilma, your problem is sticking rear brakes, , its very common , (dont listen to the idea that it may be the diff,) lol you have to laugh ,
remove the rear wheel drums and check the cables, make sure they are free to move, , lubricate the moving parts and some anti-sieze on the contact points and piviots, , rub the inside of the drums and the shoe friction material before reassemble sand your problem will be gone
good luck

I agree that its most probably the brakes, but as they've been checked at kwik-fit and deemed O.K. its not bad practice to explore other options.

howardo, you said it KWIK-fit, wouldnt trust them.

just dont think its helpfull to explore other avenues if they are not relevant , no offence,

forgot to say - rub the inside of the drums and the shoe friction material with GLASS PAPER before reassemble and your problem will be gone
good luck

I'll leave the handbrake off tonight, see if they stick in the morning, if not its a final drive problem and will check the oil in the day...

If it is a final drive problem, will topping it uo with oil be the solution> Or, will there be damage to the gearwhels in the differential as it says in the book?

Thanks
