Have noticed a squealing, rumbling noise the last couple of times i've drove my Disco 200 93'. Driving round right hand bends is mainly when the noise happens. Last night i was driving home when the noise suddenly appeared again, a weird grating kind of noise and one of the left hand wheels locked up at 30mph(not sure which wheel yet). Reversing a few feet released the wheel and allowed me to limp home. Brake pads and calipers appear to still be in their correct positions. Anyone got any pointers b4 i start stripping please?

Collapsed wheel bearing?

Many years ago, 1983 to be exact, I was following a colleagues Classic Range Rover, suddenly the LH rear wheel momentarily locked, lots of smoke and a flat on the tyre. We stopped to take a look, found nothing and drove home. Once back home I removed the hub etc. and found nothing wrong. The car ran for another 3 years with no further problems. If I hadn't been following him I wouldn't have believed him. The only thing I could think of was bearing wind-up, I've had this problem in tractor gearboxes in the past.

I bet the inner wheel bearing race has welded itself to the stub axle aswell.

these can be removed 50% of the time, with some careful cutting, grinding, and chiselling etc.

if your not a dab hand with the tools or dont want the hassle/risk, get a new stub axle before you start the job.

not expensive and handy to have a spare even if you dont use it, cos you probably will!

cheers :)
