Hi, my back door wont open at all. I've ha dto climb in the back and remove the panel and jiggle it with a screwdriver. I've been reading the forum and have tried everything suggested about removing back badge and lubricating and then cleaning and oiling the internal mechanism but still no joy. Do I need to buy a new lock or is there something I've missed. Don't want to spend money without trying all the other stuff first.
Thanks
Darrell

If you've replaced the usual problematic spring, try removing the linkage from the key barrel to the mechanism. Salt gets thrown up when you drive, and the barrel can seize. Had that with mine, took the linkage out, hey presto working lock!

If you're trying to get it open for a better look there's 2 levers on RHS of the mechanism, one is the lock, other opens the catch - both need lifting upwards

Hi, it's not the spring. Both door handles wont operate the lock. If I release the linkage its free. The internal door handle wont work the lock at all. So still unsure what is causing it to stick. Nothing is catching. The lock is fine but the outer handle is in the squeeze position. Had it 2 weeks and it was working up to the other day.

The internal handle won't open the door if the child-proof lock is on.
I'd be inclined to concentrate on the outer handle if it was me.
Failing that hold the outer handle as though opening and then hit the door next to the lock position very hard a few times with your hand.

You need to isolate the problem.
Working from the inside with tailgate shut and doorcard removed, can you open it using a pair of pliers and pulling the lever on top of the mechanism?

Do you mean that the outer handle is in the 'pulled' position?
If that is the case, this is the source of all your trouble!

It will have stuck the last time you opened the door, and if it has not gone back to the normal position then the mechanism is not 'cocked' and neither handle can release the mechanism.

pop the badge off, use a screwdriver or something to push the handle back to its normal position. This will relax the mechanism and the next pull should open the door.

Lubricate and free off the outer handle, and you will be sorted.

Totally agree, this happened on mine. Managed to prise it back out with a screw driver then sprayed it with wd40,not had any problems since.

i've had this prob a few times with different vehicles being in a bodyshop,(not just disco's) sounds like the outer handle is seized in the open/squeezed position and someone tried opening with the door locked. The only answer is to remove or lubricate to outer handle so it feels normal (some resistance when lifted) then all will be well, also it may be the latch assy that my be seized in the open position so plenty of lube should sort it.

Handle is completely free and I have disconnected it from inside. Door is in alignment. If I open the door and use a screwdriver to act as a strikeplate so the door would be closed and locked neither handle will work and I have to lift the catch on the locking mechanism.
