Evening,

I've just advanced my fuel injection pump timing on my 2.5 N/A and it goes like **** off a stick! Only problem I have now is the diesel clatter and excessive white smoke on startup and whenever on the throttle (although it does reduce somewhat when the engine is warm). I'm going to get up nice and early and reduce the timing by 2mm (as CharlesY suggests) and hope that the clatter goes away and my exhaust is smoke free again.

What do I do if it doesn't work!? (I have just changed my timing belt, but tipex marks are all back in line)

Cheers

I hope so Disco, it's the only thing that's worrying me slightly! Just another thing whilst I've got a topic running: I bent the bar that I was using to tighten up my crank bolt earlier so it should be bloody tight now should it not?

Cheers

nope, going to sort that in the morning. Will loosen off pump again and turn it away from the engine 2mm which I am hoping will do the trick.

Strange... I went out this morning with all our tools ready to retard the injection pump timing and it started up on the dot (first turn with 25 secs on glow plugs) with just the usual amount of white smoke. Took her for a spin, no diesel clatter and no smoke. The white smoke cleared after about 5-10 seconds of revving up.

The only explanation that I can think of is that the timing belt has stretched out / relaxed slightly after all the driving that I did yesterday. I'm not going to touch my injection pump, and I'm hoping that it's going to be okay.

Could this have happened, or is something not right!?
Thanks again
