axle question

ive recently bought a s3 2-1/4 petrol. has got an overdrive fitted. ive been offered a salsbury axle aswel to fit to it? would it make any difference on economy and speed or will there not be much difference to my standard one with the overdrive? will the gearing be different on the back to the front if i needed to use 4wd? cheers all

Well if the gearing in the axle is correct for a series landy it will be correct. If it's off a coil sprung landy it won't. But then if it's off a coiler it won't fit on your landy anyway. You can keep the overdrive with the salisbury if you want.

If the axle is from a series then it will the same ratio. if it is from a 110 then you will have to swap the front diff for a range/disco/90 diff. then with the overdrive you will have some seriously tall gearing, perhaps too much and it will make low box higher aswell, not always good.

depending on what you have an 88 or 109 you will need the follwing mods.
109- shorter propshaft,
88 shorter propshaft, re alighn the spring seats,

The spring mounts are also outboard of the chassis rails on a salisbury, standard axles are inboard.

Thought both were.
Theres more meat on a salisbury so probably is a bit weighty, ground clearance is less too.

I won't bother. The Salisbury axle is going to need modding to fit a SWB as the spring mounts are in a different place and the rear prop will need shortening......as has been mention above ^^^

It is also heavier and has less ground clearance than the standard Rover axle.

I would spend the money on a good engine service or making sure the brakes are tiptop.

its not a bolt on bolt off job i an in the process of fitting one to an 80 inch comp motor which i will grind the bottom of the case to gain ground clearance only because its for competition only
Another way is to move the axle back by an inch but lots of welding and fab work but worth it no good for comps tho giving you 89 inch wheelbase
