Hello rr vogue tdv8 4.4 I have a problem with the serpentine belt shredding, have had six now in 5 months some last less than 200 miles have changed most of the tensioners and pulleys ,the work is done at a place that does mostly only Land Rovers with time served mechanics, they are at a loss to what is causing the belts to shred , any one got any idea ? Any information gladly received thanks oftenlad.

Cheap belts are junk and might only last months, but this sounds excessive. Do you have any pics of a dead belt?
Do all pulleys turn freely and are they all in line? Are you putting the right one on?

Hello thanks for the replies, all parts have been genuine LR parts all except the last one we tried a after market one in desperation, lasted 20 miles . Do not have pictures of the failed belts but they where shredded looks like from the outer side of the belt not the ribbed side, as though the lamination had gave up , had new alternator , new air con pump do not know where to go now?.

Garage having a look Monday , all the pulleys and tensioners have been replaced more than once over the last year ? I will let you know how i get on , thanks for the replies any suggestions thankfully received.

As post#3 check pulley alignment, especially since you had the alternator replaced.Did it come with a pully or was the old one fitted?
Hello it started 20 months ago had a new alternator as it’s a big job they changed all the pulleys and belts , few weeks later squeal on start up changed a pulley and belt , weeks later squeal again changed other pulley and belt still squealing so changed belt again then in October belt was shredded , new belt lasted 200 mile shredded again , last one after 20 mile had stripped one rib off belt. They now say it looks like the alternator is the problem so having a new one fitted next week? . In all cost me £5000 and months without the car , all parts genuine Land Rover except for the last belt , tried a after market one in desperation, love the car but can’t go on much more.

Are the brackets for the pulleys new? Might be cracked or bent slightly causing belt to wander off centre and shred?

Other option is maybe a bearing is failing in a component causing too much tension. Altanator bearing?

Hello fitted new alternator ran for half hour on idle , belt started to ride off, now they say may be the crank pulley ? Going to try that next week.

Crank pulley, fitted still the same 20 minuets on idle belt runs of , starts to run off on pulley just before alternator?
Driving me mad.

As everyone says pulleys are not in line. Any decent mechanic should spot this and look into it.
Down pit we ran conveyor belts up to thousands of yards apart so had to be spot on with alignments so on a car engine its very critical

Changed all pulleys and idlers again engine ran for six hours on idle then shed belt , they say now probably a crank problem ? Any ideas is it possible?

Got any pictures or videos?
Rapid belt damage only occurs if the belt is running out of alignment, far too tight, or taking excessive load from a failing alternator for example.
