Im am looking to buy a disco and most seem to be auto but iv never had an automatic before so im a bit unsure.

I use my truck to pull my caravan, green laning, p&p days aswell as a daily family car. To work and back auto mite evan be cheeper but would it pull the same and how would it cope offroad?

Thanks
Si

IT aint a truck! But auto is easier.Stop and go.Bit boring for my liking and engine breaking seems less (but probbably isnt)

Dont think you will have a problem towing with an auto, like Goonarmy says they are very much stop/go. Both of my LRs have been autos and sometimes I do miss having a manual box but then if you are using it for work aswell I always think its better to have an auto when your stuck in the ol' rush hour traffic.

Havent been laning in my latest but thats only cause I have a few bits to do before i'll take it out so the only comparison I have for engine braking is my p38 which in low ratio had a manual setting and had no problems at all.

i think autos are better to drive offroad, as you cant stall them on slopes and makes for a smoother drive at very low speeds as your not worrying about the clutch, also means it much easier to crawl over obstacles aswell.
also your not fannying around with your left foot when your in slow moving traffic, having driven both manual and auto offroaders i would never go back to having a manual

Towing with Auto is less hassle, but htat;s just my opinion. Towed my caravan with a Manual car until late last year when I got the Auto Disco. So much better, less faff when pulling away, whack the right pedal and off you go!
Found it less bother when pitching up too, D, R, D, R until it was in nice and straight

I was a bit dubious before I bought my P38, but a friend had an auto D3 and persuaded me that it was way better for offroading and towing.

Now I've got my P38, I'd have to agree with him, about the offroading anyway. No problems whatsoever offroad. It's much easier to control the throttle precisely when you don't have to worry about your left foot bouncing up and down on the clutch.

I assume the Discos have a manual setting on their autoboxes as well? Well it works very well on the P38. I wouldn't go back to a manual now in a Rangey or Disco.

yep 1,2 and 3 so there is still enough engine braking on decents when they are used

thanks all

what are the 1,2 and 3 for how would i use them?:D
The gear box has 4 gears.Put the gear box into 1,2 or 3 will allow the box to cahnge up to there but no further regardless of revs roadspeed etc.

i had the same thoughts when i got mine, never had an auto before and didnt really want 1. tell ya what tho - gettin an auto is the best thing i ever did!! its easy to drive off road, less hassle on the morning commute, and pulls my pretty heavy boat without any problems!!
