As you know the auto on mine is slipping 4-5 and been diagnosed by specialist in Barnsley Martin Lowe. My local garage singing the same tune so I was resigned to a recon from Ashcrofts at £925 + VAT, Del and £350 fitting - all in at lease £1540 ouch.

Then I've come across this company on the web which are faily local.

http://theautomaticgearboxcompany.co.uk/contact2.html

They claim the following and said they can sort for £680 + VAT without removing gearbox from car!!

I quote "
It sounds like the piston has cracked at the back of the gearbox, this controls, 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse gears. At the moment the crack must be very small but trust me it will get bigger until you loose the gears I've mentioned. We only fit the latest type piston, frictions, steels and O rings etc, so once its done you wont get a re-occurrence of the problem again !
"

Is this for real or too good to be true?

The price sounds almost too good to be true, wonder if the claim made in the last sentence is something they will stand by as well?

Worth asking them a few more questions and finding out from them how many Freebies/JATCO boxes they have done in the past. If they're kosher, work is warranted and you stand to save a grand in the process then maybe worth a punt.

I dont' think there is a way to fudge this - it either works or not.

They said -

"Its 12 months on all new parts and 3 months on labor. We've never had one come back for the same fault, we only use all the latest modified parts so the problem will never re-occur."

Good grand saving so I think I will give it a shot. If I pick up drive it around thenOK fair enough but I'm more worried I might take it there and then get a phone call - we've taken it appart and x y z needs doing...end up costing more than a recon fitted.

Just had this -

We were doing 2 or 3 per week the early part of last year ! The same gearbox is fitted into the VW Sharan, Alhambra, Galaxy, Rover 75, Golf, Mondeo, they all had the same problem !

F'eck it - will give it a go, if it works out alright could save some folks on here ££

It is a common fault on this unit, and up until a few years back the only way to fix it was a new box as spares were not available. The spares are predominantly American I think, and tend to be bullet proof.

Says they get them direct from Japan.

Got to be worth a go - I just emailed them New Years eve re costs of a recon as they are more local than Ashcrofts to me.

let us know if it works and what the part is. . . . . . .

Will do guys, it's going in tomorrow. Ming I recall you had a new box at similar mileage a few years back, seems pretty common fault from what I hear.

They can do the V6 as well - but it a little more tricky due the size of the engine.

Yes i had a Ashcroft reccon never had any problems with it since though [touch wood] , but who ever do's it make sure you have a new torque converter fitted [final drive tween auto box and output ] but there was several parts u/s, its just one of those things summtimes they go on forever , mine kept hunting tween 4th un 5th . . . . .

Was tempted to go for recon - if it was a younger car I maybe but was thinking of changing before all this. Might get £3.5K private, dealer offered me £2k :( Got me eye on a F2......

Well done, really pleased for you. Have to say, if mine goes then I'll get rid of car at auction but touch wood it keeps running nicely.

can but hope - I may sell privately as the steeler offered me 2K - these are costing £4.5k at independents round here at moment!

As long as it keeps on snowing prices keep on rising....can't believe what 10yr old 4x4's are going for at the moment and fuels a fortune.

When you pick it up, see what you can find out for us. All helps. Well done.
