autobox problem

hiya

dont know if someone may be able to give me a rough idea of the following problem please

my auto box slips in 3 rd gear, when it goes from 3nd to 4th the revs go up and takes longer than it useto going into forth gear,

the hippo has been standing for a few weeks and never done it before, hope this isnt a daft question and all i understand is it has a torque convertor and what i think are called solenoids inside the gear box, do these control each gear along side the torque convertor plse

could it be a questions of where its been sitting etc or could one of the solenoids beginning to fail, i have got a hawkeye and not put it on the car yet

sorry once asking a daft question but just in case this is a red flag of something beginning to fail would rather not use it in case i cause further and more expensive damage

plus i changed the oil back in the summer and at the right level and first time its done it

Thanks for the vote of confidence

I'm no auto expert, although I know a few bits on the Jatco box.
I know the box is fluid fussy, not so much in fluid type but fluid age. It's very fussy if the fluid changes have been neglected.
I'd always recommend a fluid change and a few miles on the new fluid before condemning the box.
If it's still slipping, it could be a few things. Solenoid valves, cracked piston or worn clutch pack.

Could be worth considering that the auto boxes tend to pack up every 80,000 miles ish. Solenoid's are the main problem, unless your really confident messing with the autobox I'd take it to a specialist and get it checked out. Cheaper than buying a new one if you bugger it up.

thks guys,

done all new oil in the summer and has been working fine, it only seems since it standing for a few weeks that this fault has developed

was wondering if the hawk eye would show up anything

cant do anything at the moment cause im laid up with a really bad virus,

really appreciate the help and at least gives me some form of direction

I don't know the Jatco box, but a dose of Lucas Tranmission fix can work wonders on the ZF boxes. Frees sticky solenoid valves and stops slip. Takes a few miles to be fully effective.

Do you have a picture of the fill point that this is added through??

The freelander uses the same Jatco transmission as this mazda. This is a posting of someone having a slipping 3rd gear.

He has a nice write up of what he did, but that does not help troublehsooting though.

I have some of this waiting to be added to my gearbox oil when I get it changed in the next few weeks. I thought it was worth adding as the box has now done 120,000 miles.

Took a 1000 miles, but completely cured the flaring on 2nd/3rd and 3rd/4th shifts on my P38

I too have noticed more of them popping up. They interest me, as well as the interface diagnostics. I'm not worried about the increase as it's not much (I bumped a few recently to see what the result was) compared to the number of Freelanders on ere and on/oft road. Some say there's certain weaknesses but you have to put this into context. Every mechanical item filled with loads of parts will have a part that fails more than other parts.

Mine will interest me only if it goes faulty...heaven forbid....its sounds like a complicated nightmare......Ive changed the oil on it about 12k ago. ..4 flushes and thats about it.....it only does around 5k a year so hopefully should keep going....only problem is these 5 k a years are mostly short inner city runs..

I've seen plenty of people on the net saying "made no difference", just wondering if there are any successes.

hi

after a while since doing all the oil and making sure it was the right temp and following hippo instructions, thks buddy, it seems to behaving itself

i think it needs a good thrashing down the motorway as it hasn't had a run for a while

going to redo the hawkeye to see if any NTc codes come up and will report back

havent heard of the solutions ie, cleaners etc

am going to leave it alone for now and see what the reader comes up with

mines at 175,000 miles and not sure if its had work before but alot smoother since doing the oils

The thrash down the motorway is probably a good idea.
After changing the oil a few times (with miles in between) I drove it to London (about 230 miles), which seemed to cure the problem.
Since then a new issue has arisen, but I'm working on that one...
