Hi all,

Had a odd one eailier today. All was fine up untill I was drive back from the town, and I suddenly lost all drive.. (td5 auto).. and then it came to a hault like as if I was driving a manual and was trying to slow down to a stop in 5th gear.. sounded like it was running on 2 cylinders.. jumping and bucking about?!! Put it in park.. turned it off and back on, been fine since?!
Im lost on this one, possible gear box service needed???
 
Hi, I would certainly start with a filter & oil change for the box. As you only get half the oil out on a 'change' I would do about 500 miles & change the oil again & see if that helps (you may well find there's an improvement after the first change if it's just old oil giving you the issue).

The auto Sump bolts sometimes seize to the Sump clamps so be careful not to break any (unless you have spares handy) & careful when refitting the new filter as the sharp tin pressing where the o-ring sits can easily cut the o-ring if it becomes dislodged (see mine after whoever fitted it wasn't careful) ! A blob or two of super glue to keep the o-ring in situ will help.

9.7 litres according to the owners manual but you can only get about 5 litres out even with sump removal hence the reason you do two changes within a few hundred miles to get a decent amount of new oil in there (you only have to do the filter once). Getting the oil back in is a pain if your working on the floor unless you use a pump of some description, @Stanleysteamer uses a garden sprayer thing that you pump up to make life a bit easier. Just be sure to go through the top up/level checking procedure as per the manual, best of luck.

Lots of good advice here.
But if it went better after a switch off-switch on then sadly it looks like it may be electronic.:(
Keep us posted after you have done the oil and filter change. and yes, after having to use a garden sprayer very regularly during a long time of an ATF leak, only just sorted, I do thoroughly recommend it, and you can get a shed load of fluid in one! Makes a terrible job a lot quicker, easier and cleaner! All you have to do is unscrew and remove the tip!
 
My autobox started going into limp home mode (3rd gear only) and the M+S lights flashing. Turning oiff and on would get it going for a while. My local independent looked at it and they got a CANBUS error in the diags. Turned out the injector harness cable had started leaking oil and that had got into engine ECU and messed up the electronics. New injector harness and a cleanup solved that issue.
