I'm thinking about getting a 99 - 01 Discovery II should I bother getting the automatic version or should I stick to the manual gearbox.

I will be taking it off road to some of the event days around the country but I it needs to double up as a communter car.

Will the automatic gearbox be up to the job of difficult terain?

I'm new to the forum so please be gentle...

Depends on your personal preference. Some on here prefer manuals for off road as you have a bit more control, others like the stop go of an auto. I find autos are better for commuting when you get stuck in traffic.

Personally I would rather find a good disco than worry about what box. :)

For offroading, Manual. For city driving, Auto.

I prefers manuals myself.:)

The auto TD5's use a little more juice but only 1 or 2mpg, however they are a VERY nice drive on and off road.

They have superb control offroad because you select low ratio, press the "manual" button and you have full control of gear selection just like a manual box.

However in traffic, put it in D and let the box take the strain. Great for towing as well.

The performance of a std TD5 can be improve significantly by very cheap modifications:

De-EGR - £25

D-Catt - £60

With these two mods they (the autos) go really well when you want to hustle along.

I do miss the auto though in traffic as the clutch is quite heavy on the manual its all down to personal preference, they are much of a much ness and both have for's and agaisnts.

I would agree with the first reply look for a good model and don't worry about the box.

Thanks chaps just what I needed...

I will just try to get a decent Disco and worry about the box later.

I will look into the additional mods if a get an auto....

my 2p's worth!!

I have an auto, and yes it's good for most things, but it's cr@p for towing. every time I tow over 2t after an hour the box overheats. went to indi to get it checked out and they said it was normal, all auto DII's auto's do it (something to do with the size of the TC).

if i had another, I would go for a manual. the auto, i think, isnt the best match for the TD5 (rev's are far too high all the time)

That's definitely not been my experience. I tow quite a lot and it's always 1.5 and sometimes 2.5 tons, driving 4hrs+ without a stop and it has NEVER overheated, never shown any lights.

I do change the oil regularly which might help and I do use third gear quite a bit in hilly areas because you can get into torque lock-up at only 45mph, in 3rd, which avoids the Torque converter overheating.
