Auto gear changing

I've read a few posts on here about autos changing gear at too higher revs. Is it not practicable if driving around town to just use gears 1-3 and change them manually at the revs that the driver wants? Maybe I'm talking total poo as I've never owned an auto?
I suppose the flip side is, if you can't afford to run it don't buy it?!

That's how I thought it worked, until I RTFM'ed.....

The 1, 2 & 3 positions restricts the gearbox to just that number of ratios, so posn 1 is just the lowest ratio, posn 2 allows it to automatically change between ratios 1 & 2, and posn 3 allows the use of ratios 1, 2 & 3 - but not 4. Putting it into D will give all 4 ratios.

On a D2 in low box, pressing the Mode button puts it in Manual mode in which you select the exact gear with the selector. Not very useful around town though....

I don't know - you could leave it in 4 which would approximate to somewhere between 1st and 2nd high ratio........
