Auto cambelt tensioner

I have just replaced the cambelt on my 1.8 Freelander and had great difficultly in aligning the automatic cambelt tensioner! The difficulty was that I couldn't see it cos the engine mount was in the way. In the end, I jacked up the engine and removed the engine mount and set it by using a mirror so I could see what I was doing!

Is there an easier way of setting it?

I noticed that they had a manual tensioner but had removed the engine mount for access, so it must be the way!
