When coming to a stop it sometimes feels like I'm pushing against something like a rod which won't let me get to the end of the pedal travel and is stopping the brakes having their full effect. Anyone had this before? It almost feels like the pedal lock is kicking in or like I'm fighting something in the abs?

a pulse or just solid, if you hold foot hard on brake and keep it there does pedal sink when engines started
It's hard to explain its more like mecanical intervention. There is no problem with the breaks other than occasionally right at the end of breaking for example a few feet away from a junction. The servo is fine and it's not abs pulse. Its like there is a physical restriction I will wait for when it happens and try to get a better discreption for you

Guys, it's classic symptom of ABS(EBD) activity , worn or differently worn tyres, even worst if they are different brand/dimension, uneven pressures on one axle, etc can cause this without being a problem with the system but sensor missbehaviour can cause that too

QUOTE: WABCO - Hydraulic ADD-ON ABS system:
EBD operates in forward and reverse and is automatically enabled whenever the ABS modulator is in the normal braking mode at vehicle deceleration rates of 0.3 g and above (i.e. medium to high brake pedal loads). EBD operation is similar to that of ABS, but is calibrated to intervene at lower wheel slip limits and operates the brakes in axle pairs instead of individually.
....
Operation of EBD is detectable from a stiffening of brake pedal movement as the inlet solenoid valves close and a slight pulsing of the brake pedal as the inlet solenoid valves open. EBD operation ceases immediately the brake pedal is released.
.....

AFAIK all wabco electronic ABS systems have it but even if they dont the symptom occurs when the ABS kicks in as well cos the IV's and OV's in the modulator are also working...and the guy didnt say what Disco he has.

EBD is a sub system of ABS that wasn't available untill the D2 arrived and was fitted with all the additional electronic kit to go with it.
My companies first Honda Accord had it back in 2004, and the cars I own now other than the disco have it so I know it works.

Just look at the Lyndon's profile and it states 300Tdi

so what is the best way to go about sorting it? Tyre pressure, check uneven wear. How can I tell if I have a sensor playing up? Or can I unplug the abs?

Just remove the fuse and power down the ECU and go for a drive and if the issue has gone away that's where it is.
U can check your tyre pressure but a 1 or 2 PSI either way won't make any difference, do u have odd tyres? vacuum pump working 100% ?
